The US Military Academy at West Point will finally unveil a new monument dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers, a group of Black soldiers who played a key role in the westward expansion of the US. The Buffalo Soldiers taught riding skills at the academy for 40 years.

Juneteenth is a national commemoration marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to free the remaining slaves residing in Galveston, Texas.

This was a day of liberation for all African Americans. Since then, the Army has been one of the leading institutions to enforce diversity and inclusion. The United States Military Academy-West Point, the Army’s preeminent leadership institution, has continued to pave the way for diversity and inclusion through various diversity programs such as the Cultural Affairs Seminar.
