Russ Cochran's Comic Book Art Auctions ...Russ Cochran's Original Art Auction. For the past 30 years Russ Cochran has been collecting and publishing comic art. In 1964 Russ earned his Ph.D.

Russ Cochran was born in West Plains, Missouri. Without television in the 1940s, Russ developed a passion for comic books. in Physics and became the Chairman of the Drake University Physics Department in Des Moines, Iowa. As time passed, Russ felt the desire to become a collector of the comic books he had always enjoyed in his youth. The hobby brought him to his first comic book convention in 1965

. Russ pursued a collector’s connection with Bill Gaines, publisher of EC Comics and MAD Magazine. Bill Gaines and Russ Cochran shared a mutual enthusiasm which led to a great friendship. Their relationship inspired Russ Cochran to republish the entire collection of EC comics. In 1975 Russ followed his dream by moving back to West Plains, Missouri while devoting all of his energy toward publishing. Today Russ Cochran’s Auction offers select comic art for those collectors who share his appreciation and nostalgia.

The TARZAN SUNDAY PAGE limped to life in 1931, with art by Rex Maxon. Maxon was replaced by young artist Harold Foster of Canada. Hal Foster did the TARZAN Sunday from Sept. 1931 through mid-1937. These are the greatest TARZAN Sundays...say some...but others say that after Burne Hogarth took over the TARZAN Sunday page in 1937, the art reached new heights. It was...different...but better than Foster? That's a matter of personal taste. In 1937 Foster left the TARZAN Sunday page to Hogarth and started his own Sunday page, PRINCE VALIANT. Brooklyn artist TOM GRINDBERG has labored over the past few years, creating a whole new series of adventures of Tarzan, Jane, D'Arnot, La of Opar and her Beast-Men, N'kima, Sheeta, and all the other wonderful Burroughs characters brought to life by writer Roy Thomas and artist Tom Grindberg. Here is one of Grindberg's finest pages, featuring all the main characters, with special attention to the beautiful but deadly La of Opar. In 1970, before he started painting his Donald Duck paintings, Carl Barks painted pastoral scenes like this. Currently at $200, this Barks oil will probably sell for less than $500. Some of Barks's Disney oils have sold for more than $100,000.
