Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky! đ
Born on this day in 1882, Stravinsky would go on to become one of the most revolutionary composers in history... and one of the few whose music started a fight.
On the night of May 29, 1913, at the Théùtre des Champs-ĂlysĂ©es in Paris, the curtain rose on "The Rite of Spring." Within minutes, the audience erupted. The jagged rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and pounding bassoon opening were unlike anything listeners had ever heard. Booing, shouting, and scuffling broke out across the hall; some accounts say fistfights. Stravinsky himself reportedly fled backstage. It was one of the most infamous premieres in musical history (History Today).
And yet, "The Rite of Spring" went on to reshape Western music entirely. Its driving polyrhythms and bold orchestration influenced everything from classical composition to jazz, film scores, and beyond.
Now, over a century later, we invite you to experience this groundbreaking masterpiece live. Palm Beach Symphony performs "The Rite of Spring" on May 23, 2027, a chance to hear, feel, and be moved by the work that changed everything. No fighting required... link in bio.
