Born on this day: 🎉

Virginia has recently designed a delicate adaption of her sculpture ‘Untitled (pink buoy)’, which was on view at the 2022 , for a set of limited-edition artist Christmas ornaments created in collaboration with .

The original buoys exhibited in Venice are made of glass in the luminous pink hue of Venetian streetlamps, covered in salvaged fish net, and were installed in the lagoon at the Arsenale as a reference to the city's long history with the fishing industry.

Happy Birthday !

Rich in tactile details and inviting textures, Marguerite’s recent exhibition ‘meys’ at White Cube Bermondsey revealed how close sculptural process sit to the language of nature.

From building layers of wax that accumulate like rings of tree growth, to casting from a mould as when splitting the husks of a chestnut to reveal the smooth, perfectly-fitting conker.

In Focus: , ‘Untitled (Shao Maya Punté Kené 1, 2021)’ at

Without a defined orientation, the design of Kené is valued for its expertly winding rhythms and playful direction of extended form-lines (peshtin).

Sara’s work is exemplary in this regard, as it executes a purposeful trajectory of strokes from which finer traceries (kétana) emerge, while nested within these empty spaces are precisely formed filler motifs (weshé).

Happy Birthday !

Focusing on the relationship between nature and culture in her figurative work, Julie exposes and reworks female archetypes through a surrealist sense of the uncanny.

Featured in the artist’s recent exhibition, ‘Bitter Apples’, at White Cube Hong Kong, ‘South of Eden’ (2023) depicts Adam and Eve companionably brushing their teeth at a bathroom mirror set under the loggia out of a Renaissance annunciation.

Suggesting events following their expulsion from Eden, the tan lines from a modern bikini hint at the part of the tale where Eve covers herself for the first time in her newfound shame, serving to make her as convincingly specific as van Eyck’s couple.

: ‘Sculpture is an extraordinary thing – it’s still, silent things in a world full of things. But if they work, their stillness in silence can provoke our movement.’

Between sanctuary and control, freedom and discipline, Antony Gormley’s ‘Body Politic’ calls upon qualities intrinsic to sculpture – silence, stillness and materiality – to allow visitors to become more aware of their own freedoms of movement and mind.

Richard Hunt (1935 - 2023)

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Richard Howard Hunt, who died peacefully on Saturday 16 December 2023, aged 88, at his home in Chicago.

In the pantheon of 20th-century sculptors, Richard stood as one of the preeminent masters.

At the core of his artistic and philosophical approach was a fundamental concern with freedom; of political and artistic freedom, as well as personal and universal freedom.

He said: ‘I am interested more than anything else in being a free person. To me, that means that I can make what I want to make, regardless of what anyone else thinks I should make.’
Employing an alchemist’s touch Richard created sculptures whose fluid, biomorphic forms emerged as if shaped directly from nature.

White Cube will work closely with the Richard Hunt Estate, led by Ken Merlau (Trustee of the Richard Hunt Trust), to promote and protect his art and legacy for future generations.

A celebration of Richard’s life, open to the public, will be held in Chicago in Spring 2024, with dates to be announced.

The gallery’s solo exhibition of the artist’s sculpture will continue as planned at White Cube New York in March 2024.

Plan your visit to ‘ : Lesser Numerator’ at (until 13 January 2024)

The compositions of the paintings in ‘Lesser Numerator’ are compact and tightly wound in a circle.

The artist views each sphere as an entrance – a portal, with the lines representing a multitude of doorways.

Full of overlapping and collapsing spaces, the compositions allude to the intensity of our lives and suggest that choosing the right space for oneself in the layered and complex world can be a challenging task.

Happy Birthday Miroslaw Balka!

Focusing on materials loaded with personal significance and readily available as part of his local landscape, ‘Angel’ (1988) reflects a pivotal moment in the artist’s practice, marking the development of his visual language to that of abstract and minimal renderings.

While embodying a physical form, ‘Angel’ reveals the artist’s exploration of how the stark theatricality of his materials can evoke a corporeal absence or resonate as textural allusions to the language of Christian metaphor.

A special ‘Unboxing’ event of Miroslaw Balka’s works, led by curator Esther Adler and curatorial assistant Margarita Lizcano Hernandez, is scheduled to take place at the MoMA in New York on Thursday 11 January, at 11am EST.

Rooted in the traditions of her ancestral heritage and informed by the interconnectivity of the Amazonian ecosystem, Sara’s complex and intricately geometric works express the ancient practice of Kené.

In Focus: ‘Weave Works’ at White Cube Bermondsey

Located in the North Gallery of White Cube Bermondsey, a series of six ‘Weave Works’ map the volume of the human body.

Cast from orthogonal, latticed cast iron bars, these sculptures allow space and light to pass through them, creating an illusion of shifting density and bridging sculptural and architectural space.

The artist has said: ‘The ‘Weaves’ are skeletons of the underpinning of our architectural context […] All of them are in contact with the walls, the floor, and the pillars that hold that building together in order to question and recognise that we are conditioned by the world that we have made. They make you aware of your own position of being contained by these spaces.’

An homage to his grandfather’s sharecropping days in rural Georgia, the work was created by welding found steel tubing, continuing in the lineage of Julio González and David Smith’s notion of sculpture as a ‘drawing in space’, while also recalling Alberto Giacometti’s ‘The Chariot’ (1950).

In this painting a female figure lies prone, her body contorted, framed within a loosely delineated form that can be simultaneously read as a bed, a shallow grave or a vast topography of mark-making.

Through the rotation of the canvas, blood-red and white drips flow both downward and upward towards the picture’s edge, serving to both anchor and to release the figure from their surroundings.

Framed by aphoristic titles, the works in Harland’s latest exhibition, ‘All Night Meteorite’, implement the artist’s extensive reserve of cultural references, while making use of the saturated expanses and gestural abandon of mid-20th-century abstraction.

In ‘ESP Love Magnet’ Harland uses an abbreviation of the alleged paranormal ability of ‘extrasensory perception’, playing with the idea that a painting has the capacity to transcend its status as a decorative object, operating more in a manner akin to a mantra or a lucky charm.
