Born on this day: 🎉

David’s sculptures blur the boundaries of inside and outside; realism and abstraction; human and animal, appearing to be in a continuous state of transformation.

In ‘The Whaler’ (2023), the artist explores Jungian theory of the collective unconscious, where ancestral memories become archetypes that establish instinctual behaviours. Here, the whale represents the unconscious whilst the readied harpoon attempts to exercise control over it.

The artist has said, ‘A perfect object for me is something that is extremely seductive and extremely repulsive at the same time.’

Born on this day:

As part of Tiona’s recent exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey, the installation ‘A MERCY’ draws its title from a 2008 novel by Toni Morrison.

Comprised of a series of hand-painted steel head gates – devices used to restrain livestock – the artist contemplates their dual capacity to soothe and facilitate brutality, drawing parallels with Morrison’s novel, set in late 17th-century colonial America.

In Focus: ‘Spinal Sheds of a Desperate Glory’ (2024) at White Cube Paris

A striking piece from Ilana’s new body of work, produced for her exhibition at White Cube Paris, ‘Spinal Sheds of a Desperate Glory’ (2024) explores notions of conflict and bravery.

With fragmented forms suggestive of armoured bodies brandishing rod-like weapons that bisect the picture plane, Ilana delves into the metaphor of the spine as a symbol of courage.

Referencing Wilfrid Owen’s WWI poem ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’, which vividly describes the guttural horrors of war, the painting’s title evokes the grim reality behind perceived heroism.

’s ‘Darkness Against Nature’ is now open at White Cube New York until 23 August 2024.

‘Darkness Against Nature’ takes its title from the earliest work in the exhibition. Painted in 1980, the artwork exemplifies the artist’s conceptual concerns regarding the agency of colour.

Committed to the notion of ‘painting with colour and form alone’, Yoko creates immersive compositions in a reduced palette that articulate the primacy of painterly expression.

Now Open: ‘ : About Space’ at White Cube Bermondsey (until 1 September 2024)

Bringing together masterworks from across his five-decade career, the selection of works on view reveals the extent to which Held pioneered new realms of dimensionality in painting through a combination of hard-edged geometry and spontaneous gestural expression.

Describing his work as ‘a space that is in constant flux, that is never at rest, that is relational’, Held’s continuous experimentations with scale, form, space and colour pushed the boundaries of spatial abstraction.

Coming Soon: ‘Continuum’ at White Cube Mason’s Yard (10 July – 24 August 2024)

Marking the artist’s debut solo exhibition in London, the works in this show expand upon the ‘Continuum’ series, first shown at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2023, in which the artist depicts immense hydrological formations interacting with man-made mechanical interventions.

Transcending specifics of time and place, the artist places mortal endeavour in contention with the sublime forces of nature, a preoccupation evident throughout his practice.

To celebrate the opening of ‘Continuum’, the artist will be joined in conversation with Sam Thorne, CEO and Director General of Japan House London, at White Cube Mason's Yard on Tuesday 9 July at 5.30pm.

The conversation will be followed by the exhibition preview from 6.30–8.30pm.

⏰ Final week to visit ‘Boombox’ at (until 29 June 2024)

In her second exhibition with the gallery, Danica examines structures of power and their impact on daily life, bodies, relationships and industries.

The artist's detail-laden, panoptical compositions scrutinise the everyday through an enhanced lens. Using shifting perspectives, merging images and manipulating proportions, a poetic framework emerges in which the familiar makes room for the uncanny.

Drawing inspiration from the late Susan Rothenberg’s ‘Mary III’ (1974), Ilana Savdie’s ‘Ecdysis’ (2024) features a crouching central figure that explores the tension and ambiguity between forcible submission and the will to be dominated.

The print delves into several major themes central to Ilana’s practice, including the monstrosity of transitional states, societal pressures and, in her own words, ‘failure as a performance that articulates modes of dissent’.

Experience ’s ethereal sculptures in ‘DUST’ at

For ‘DUST’ Marguerite has created a series of sculptures that visualise the activation points of ‘Orisons’ (2023) – a major landwork that took place in a single 160-acre fallow crop circle in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, curated and produced by Black Cube, Nomadic Art Museum.

Through compositions in copper wire, bronze, glass, unglazed terracotta, onyx and organza, the enmeshed histories of ‘Orisons’ take three-dimensional form.

Developed in tandem with the sculptures, a suite of works on paper engage with whirling energies through layers of watered-down pigment.

In support of at the Olympic games, Harland Miller has created a limited-edition print and a poster in collaboration with King and McGaw.

‘WIN’ is based on a painting of the same name, which featured in Harland’s major solo exhibition ‘Imminent End, Rescheduled Eternally’ at White Cube Bermondsey in 2022.

Part of Harland’s hard-edge letter paintings, these works present mono or bi-syllabic words in bold blocks of colour and a range of typefaces. Through a process of isolating and overlaying, the graphic rendering creates a tension between reading and looking.

Inspired by the illuminated lettering of medieval manuscripts, a form to which Harland brings a Pop Art sensibility, the series combines and celebrates the sacred and the everyday.

Opening Event: ‘Al Held: About Space’ at White Cube Bermondsey (Wednesday 26 June 2024, 6–8pm)

Join us for a special exhibition preview of our major survey of the late-American abstract painter Al Held at White Cube Bermondsey, with summer cocktails and snacks served in the courtyard.

During his 50-year career, Al Held (1928–2005) explored the ability of abstraction to reach beyond the realm of the viewer’s primary senses.

‘Al Held: About Space’ unveils masterworks from seminal series across the artist’s career – from the vibrant, expressive ‘Taxi Cab’ paintings (1959–60) to the hyper-real, futuristic spaces of the ‘Luminous Constructs’ (1985–2005).

Coming Soon: Yoko Matsumoto ‘Darkness Against Nature’ at White Cube New York (28 June – 23 August 2024)

‘Darkness Against Nature’ marks Yoko’s second exhibition with White Cube and her return to New York after nearly 30 years.

The artist’s first visit to the city in 1967 profoundly influenced her practice, with her discovery of the works of American abstract expressionists such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler.

Throughout her 60-year career as an abstract painter, Yoko has developed a distinctive approach working in varied medium to explore colour in a processual and meditative manner, layering hues to create a tracery of nebulous forms and gestures.

Happy birthday !

Ilana’s vibrant, large-scale paintings look at themes of performance, transgression, identity and power.

Beginning with drawing, the artist explores forms and colours through a process of digital collage, arriving at loose pictorial compositions which are then further resolved during the act of painting.

‘Paper Planes’ (2024), a new artwork by the artist, is featured in her exhibition ‘Ectopia’, currently on view at White Cube Paris until 27 July 2024.

In Focus: ‘Clowns Travel Through Wires’ (2013) at Art Basel (Stand C14)

An exquisite example of Bradford’s abstract practice, ‘Clowns Travel Through Wires’ (2013) is a monumental mixed-media canvas that showcases the artist’s innovative technique of ‘painting with paper’.

Building up his compositions with layer upon layer of ephemera – flyers, magazines and other paper detritus salvaged from the streets of his hometown, Los Angeles – often combined with printed material the artist fabricates himself, Bradford then tears, cuts and sands the surface.

The artist has commented: ‘It’s almost like a rhythm, I’m a builder and a demolisher. I put up so I can tear down […] In archaeological terms, I excavate, and I build at the same time’.

Closing Soon: ‘AERIAL’ at White Cube New York (until 15 June 2024)

Through a critical engagement with his own physical existence, Antony identifies art as a place where new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise.

The exhibition features two recent developments in the artist’s practice: one explores physical proximity in mass and scale, where two over-life-size bodies merge as one, while the other endeavours to catalyse space almost without mass.

Visit ‘AERIAL’ until 15 June 2024. Due to the nature of the exhibition, advanced booking is advised.

Al Held’s monumental painting ‘Black Nile VII’ (1974) is on view as part of Art Basel’s ‘Unlimited’ section, a platform dedicated to large-scale works at the fair.

One of Held’s most important large-scale works, this dramatic painting, predominantly black, utilises hard-edge white lines to create geometric forms that intersect and overlap.

The work presents a dynamic composition that displays form advancing and receding into, out of and across the picture plane.

: ‘I think of ‘Aerial’ as […] a place in which the space itself has been catalysed, articulated through this structure which has no direct reference to the body, until you are in it; and it’s your body that becomes then the subject of the space.’

On the occasion of Antony Gormley’s current exhibition, ‘AERIAL’, at White Cube New York, the artist was joined in conversation with Tom Eccles, Executive Director of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York.

‘AERIAL’ presents two recent developments in Gormley’s practice, in which the artist considers sculpture as an instrument for proprioception.
