I like to make mention, on occasion of my old friend Don Ashley. REMEMBERING DONALD ASHLEY 1943 - 2021
Don was the nephew of Jack and Ruby Singhiser, the last owners of Fontaine Ferry Park. [1946-1969]. He was my source for a great deal of the photographs, advertisements and park related material that I post on this site. Don spent much of his childhood at the park and possessed a wealth of knowledge as to the park's history. He had countless stories to tell and willingly shared them with all of us. Don was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. I consider myself fortunate to have been counted among his many friends.

At first glance, this looks like nothing more than an old carriage step or a kitchen utensil. It turns out there's more to the story. Some of you may remember that Fontaine Ferry Park hosted semi professional boxing. According to my old friend Don Ashley, a nephew of the parks owners, they kept this metal implement soaking in a bucket of ice water. When a fighter took a particularly hard hit to the head, the trainer would apply this to the wound to take down the swelling. Then, it was back in the ring for another round.

Opening Day at Fontaine Ferry Park. For many Louisvillians, the official start of summer. It might still be a little cool, but that wasn't going to stop anyone. The line was forming at the gate. The rides were ready. The concession stands stocked and the smell of popcorn and corn dogs in the air. Lets go make some memories. 🙂

With opening day being just a couple of weeks away, preparations would be in full swing to ready the park for the season. The park usually opened the Sunday after the Kentucky Derby. Painting to be done, grass to be cut, rides to be serviced and hundreds of last minute details to see finished, so when the gates finally opened everything would be ready for a season of fun.

Fontaine Ferry Park hosted countless fund raisers over the years. Patriotic causes were always a favorite. Including this one, in 1918 benefiting the Orphans' Home League and a fund to buy an ambulance for the boys "over there".

This is the time of year when most people are done with winter. Enough already. Yet there's hope on the horizon. The days are getting longer. The snow has melted. Thoughts turn to spring and all the fun that comes with warm weather. Usually, by late March, work would begin to ready Fontaine Ferry Park for the season. I'm told that word spread quickly through the neighborhood, at the sight of the first workers. "It won't be long now".

Wishing all our friends a Merry Christmas.
Christmas was a quiet time at the park. Jack and Ruby Singhiser, the park owners, spent the winter in Florida. Only a few employees remained to look after the grounds. Come spring, usually late March, work would begin to ready the park for the summer. I'm told that word spread quickly through the neighborhood, at the sight of the first workers. "It won't be long now".
