8 July 1980, Queen performed the first of four Sold-Out evenings at The LA Forum, Inglewood, California šŗšø āThe Game Tourā
Itās been documented that Michael Jackson attended one of these shows, meeting the band afterward in their dressing room.
āIām not a Queen fan, Iām a Freddie Mercury fanā (Michael Jackson)
āMichael (Jackson) used to come and see our shows at The Forum in LA, I guess he liked us. So I got to meet him and he kept coming see us and we started talking. When Iām talking to him I think, Oh my God! Heās 25 and Iām 37, yet heās been in the business almost longer than I have, because he started that young. For me, itās quite frightening talking to someone whoās 25, youād think someone who was 22 or 25 would just have been starting out and I could teach him a few tricks, but not Michael. I think one of the tracks would have been on the āThrillerā album if I had finished it, but I missed out.ā
āCredit for the song āAnother One Bites The Dustā should go to Michael Jackson in many ways. He was a fan and friend of ours and kept telling me, āFreddie, you need a song the cats can dance to.ā John introduced this riff to us during rehearsal that we all immediately thought of disco, which was very popular at the time. We worked it out and once it was ready, played it for Michael. I knew we had a hit as he bobbed his head up and down. āThat's it, that's the gravy. Release it and it will top the charts,ā he said. So we did and it did.ā (Freddie Mercury)
Rolling Stone Magazine said, āCan I tell my viewers that Michael Jackson is a Queen fanā
āIām a Freddie Mercury fan,ā he says, slipping past her into a long room crowded with Queen band members... Michael is shy, standing quietly at the door until Freddie spots him and leaps up to gather him in a hug.ā
ā
Though they are hardly alike, the two have been friendly since Michael listened to the material Queen had recorded for āThe Gameā and insisted that the single had to be āAnother One Bites The Dustā.
āNow he listens to me, right Freddie?ā
āRighto, little brother.ā
Freddie waves his cigarette at the platters of fruit, fowl and candy.
āYou and your friends make yourselves comfortable.ā (Rolling Stone cover story and interview with Michael Jackson, seen in 17th February 1983 edition)
It turns out Michael was absolutely right, as the r&b-flavoured track would be Queen's best-selling 45 release worldwide, particularly in the US.
It topped US, Israel, Spain and Canadian charts!
