Early June 1977 - Freddie at his home, Stafford Terrace, Kensington, London
Freddie invites journalist, Tim Lott to his home for an exclusive interview
ā€œI want my privacy, and I feel I’ve given a lot for it. It’s like Greta Garbo, isn’t it, Virgo, same star sign. I vahnt to be ahlohhhn. Sometimes you want to hide. That was interpreted as he, wants to be aloof, he’s arrogant …
I do keep to myself. I get bored very easily. With all the things I wanted came a lot of unforeseen problems.
You’re the first person I’ve spoken to, you know that don’t you? The first English journalist since well before the last American tour. I’ve had my share of speaking. I felt I didn’t have anything to say. Oh gohhhd, they must think I’m such a bore anyway. And I was slagging off the British press in America and rightly so because we were a fashionable group to slag. And still are.
You’d be surprised how much we revel in it. But I know I’ve got this reputation of not speaking to people. I’m not a good talker anyway, I ramble on without saying much. I don’t want to bore people with my chat.ā€

Queen’s exclusive ā€œShorts and Suspendersā€ party @ The Embassy Club, London, UK on June 5, 1982 šŸ„‚šŸŽ‰ā™„ļø
The party followed the bands amazing concert in Milton Keynes. The guests were asked to dress in suspenders, shorts or anything unconventional depending on the individual’s taste.
It was a wild night that carried on well into the early hours of the next morning.
Queen was celebrating the end of their ā€˜European Hot Space Tour’ before beginning their final North American Tour (with Freddie and John) which will commence towards the end of July 1982

ā€œTo get to the venue, we took off in a helicopter from Westland heliport. This was my first trip in a helicopter and this model seated about ten. The party included the four members of the band, Bill Reid, Paul Prenter, myself and some security. The others had gone on ahead by road. The helicopter was used because it was the only way to guarantee the band getting to Milton Keynes at all. They had been informed that the traffic problems were enormous and there was no certainty that they would get there at all going by car.ā€
Peter Freestone
It was Freddie’s first experience of a helicopter: ā€˜I was terrified. I don’t like flying in anything smaller than a jumbo jet, darling, and this thing was so small! But I was told we had photographers and the like at the other end waiting for us to arrive, so I couldn’t possibly let them see how shaken I was! My knuckles were white from gripping the arm rests. But when we arrived I stepped out of that machine with a smile on my face looking like I did it every day, no one was any the wiser.’ šŸ’›

6 June 1980 - Queen release the single ā€˜Play The Game’ in the USA šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø with ā€˜A Human Body’ as the B-Side
Freddie Mercury penned the track ā€˜Play The Game’. It was the third UK single from ā€˜The Game’ album. The song was a strong change of direction for the band - as it was their first released track to feature a synthesizer. Freddie plays the piano.
By the time Queen released their eighth studio album, ā€˜The Game,’ Freddie’s songs had started to focus mainly on the pursuit of love and happiness, and most of the lyrics took a more literal approach.
Roger Taylor said in an interview in 1980, ā€œI don’t really sympathize with the lyrics. It was suggested that we call the album ā€˜Play The Game,’ and I don’t like the idea of that; basically that means, in English, let’s go along with the establishment. I don’t particularly sympathize with that view.ā€
Roger apparently misinterpreted the song’s meaning of lust, love, romance and a lover not following Freddie’s arbitrary rules of love.
ā€˜Play The Game’ was a hit in the UK, reaching #14 on the charts, and in the US it peaked at #42
Billboard Magazine considered "Play the Game" to be a return to Queen's traditional "epic, rather grand sound" after deviating from that sound with the rockabilly of their prior hit single "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."
The band filmed the video several days prior (May 29) and Freddie showed off his new look featuring his mustache. An image that became his trademark.
Queen’s eighth studio album, ā€˜The Game’ was released 30 June 1980, immediately topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

8 July 1980, Queen performed the first of four Sold-Out evenings at The LA Forum, Inglewood, California šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø ā€œThe Game Tourā€
It’s been documented that Michael Jackson attended one of these shows, meeting the band afterward in their dressing room.
ā€œI’m not a Queen fan, I’m a Freddie Mercury fanā€ (Michael Jackson)
ā€œMichael (Jackson) used to come and see our shows at The Forum in LA, I guess he liked us. So I got to meet him and he kept coming see us and we started talking. When I’m talking to him I think, Oh my God! He’s 25 and I’m 37, yet he’s been in the business almost longer than I have, because he started that young. For me, it’s quite frightening talking to someone who’s 25, you’d think someone who was 22 or 25 would just have been starting out and I could teach him a few tricks, but not Michael. I think one of the tracks would have been on the ā€˜Thriller’ album if I had finished it, but I missed out.ā€
ā€œCredit for the song ā€˜Another One Bites The Dust’ should go to Michael Jackson in many ways. He was a fan and friend of ours and kept telling me, ā€˜Freddie, you need a song the cats can dance to.’ John introduced this riff to us during rehearsal that we all immediately thought of disco, which was very popular at the time. We worked it out and once it was ready, played it for Michael. I knew we had a hit as he bobbed his head up and down. ā€˜That's it, that's the gravy. Release it and it will top the charts,’ he said. So we did and it did.ā€ (Freddie Mercury)
Rolling Stone Magazine said, ā€œCan I tell my viewers that Michael Jackson is a Queen fanā€
ā€˜I’m a Freddie Mercury fan,’ he says, slipping past her into a long room crowded with Queen band members... Michael is shy, standing quietly at the door until Freddie spots him and leaps up to gather him in a hug.ā€
ā €
Though they are hardly alike, the two have been friendly since Michael listened to the material Queen had recorded for ā€˜The Game’ and insisted that the single had to be ā€˜Another One Bites The Dust’.
ā€œNow he listens to me, right Freddie?ā€
ā€œRighto, little brother.ā€
Freddie waves his cigarette at the platters of fruit, fowl and candy.
ā€œYou and your friends make yourselves comfortable.ā€ (Rolling Stone cover story and interview with Michael Jackson, seen in 17th February 1983 edition)
It turns out Michael was absolutely right, as the r&b-flavoured track would be Queen's best-selling 45 release worldwide, particularly in the US.
It topped US, Israel, Spain and Canadian charts!

ā€œBrian and I were thinking about poverty going on all around the world and that’s why the track ā€œIs This The World We Createdā€ came about. I think for Live Aid we’re actually going to do that as a special thing, right at the end.
It’s very odd, but we composed that particular song well before the Live Aid project, but it seems to fit in quite well. It was about the suffering and starvation of children all over the planet, and it matched the situation so well that we decided it was definitely one song we would do. I tell you, when it comes to that duet, this song is an integral part of what’s going on, and the song seems to convey a lot of what the event is about. I think that’s probably going to bring tears to my eyes when we do it. I’ll have to make sure I do it properly. It’s amazing.
The first line is, ā€œJust look at all those hungry mouths we have to feed.ā€ I can’t believe it. It’s as if someone actually asked us to write a song for this event, but we had one already. Actually, it was Jim Beach’s idea. Because it was there, all written, and that’s why they’ve given us a special spot.
I wouldn’t like to say I wrote all the lyrics, Brian helped, but I remember most of the lyrics of that song are mine, Brian probably did help with a line here and there.ā€
Freddie Mercury 1984 Interview
This song was written as a last minute replacement for ā€œThere Must Be More To Life Than Thisā€ which had been written in 1981 and intended for the Hot Space album and again for The Works as the album closer. Freddie was reportedly inspired to write this song after viewing a documentary on television about poverty in Africa.
This song was featured on Live Aid as part of the finale. A stunning performance
