Beat the heat and tap into your creativity this Saturday at our free Writers' Workshop, happening from 10 AM-1 PM in the Twiford Room on the third floor!

Join regional talents, including Sharon Burtner, Laurel Senick, Stan and Donna Colson, and Paul Vincent, in a workshop exploring the art of writing. This workshop will benefit writers of many levels and specialties, offering a variety of perspectives on the writing and publishing processes from those who know the game.

Kicking off the workshop, Burtner will introduce her practice of combining painting and poetry before leading the group in an exercise. Next, Senick’s portion focuses on the act of getting words on the page, the importance of a writing mission statement, and when it’s okay to invite others to critique your work. The Colsons, whose focus lies in children’s literature, will shed light on their process of writing, editing, and illustrating a book. Then, in the final segment, attendees will get a look at the technicalities of completing a book with Vincent, who will explain the role of photos and captions from a publishing perspective.

Hello all. We hope that this finds you faring well these days.

We’re posting today to let you all know that after much discussion and consideration, it has been decided that Mountain Splash will not happen this year.

Because this event is so socially inclined, and because our space at the school is so limited, we feel that if we go ahead with the event, it would be “watered down” in a sense because of Covid. We have elected instead to wait until 2022 to attempt to host the event at a time when hopefully we can go full speed ahead and host it the way it is supposed to be, chock-full of artists and visitors and lots of good mojo....noise, and fun!

We thank you for your interest and support of our event, past and future, and will be looking forward to seeing you all in West Jefferson in 2022!!!

Hi All! It is with sadness that we're announcing we are not holding Mountain Splash in 2020. 😭😭😭

This is due to the uncertainty with COVID in NC this fall. We do not want to have to cancel your travel plans or put any of you at risk.

As Mountain Splash is designed to bring artists from all over together we think this is the most proactive choice we can make in regards to the health of our artists, visitors, and staff.

We will miss you this year so please check in with us through Facebook & email!

Calling All Artists to Elizabeth City, NC
April 20 -26, 2020

We are extremely happy to announce that registration for RIVER SPLASH is now OPEN! Splash Studio on Main Street will open at noon on Monday April 20th and close at noon on Sunday April 26th. This Spring’s SPLASH will be bigger and better than ever featuring a variety of art venues and events during the week.

We are calling it River Splash to focus on the issues of water quality along the coast. While we usually don’t raise a lot of money with this event, we have always given whatever money we have raised to a local charity. This year we are excited that we have decided to donate our funds to the K-12 art program at Ocracoke School. As you may remember, the island was devastated by Hurricane Dorian this fall and since that time the art teacher has not had a classroom or supplies for his 150 students who are still on the island. We could not think of a better way for us as artists to support the arts and hope you all agree.

So what is SPLASH? You might ask if you have never attended.

It is North Carolina’s only city-wide retreat for visual artists, where novice artists can work alongside professional artists, and that incorporates photography, fiber, pottery, metal artists along with music venues into the event. It is:

● An opportunity to escape from the real world of responsibility and immerse yourself in your art
● A retreat -- a gathering of artists
● A time to make new friends and network professionally
● A time to hone your skills and learn from others
● A time to enjoy all that a quaint little river town has to offer

We have secured our large studio (Super Ten) space once again and each day will feature an artist in residence who will be happy to do a critique, offer advice and who will do a free demo. To date we have secured Mike Rooney, Kelly Cameron, and Linda Starr to serve in this role. Professor Jeff Whelan and his art students from Elizabeth City State University will be conducting drawing circles daily which are open to everyone. Friday we will have a Downtown Art Studio Crawl which will provide an opportunity for artists to sell their work and, of course, our inspiration for this event Jane Filer will be with us.

In addition to the above, we are working on a Low Country Boil on the river featuring a great local band for one evening, and for Saturday we are working with outstanding local vocal artists who will be featured in an opera appreciation/education event and we are working on a plein air paint-out event. Finally, we are working with another local group who wants to do a home tour focusing on using original art for home decorating. We will keep you apprised as these events (and others!) are finalized.

We encourage you to register soon as we will only have space for about 45 artists. If we can answer any questions, please contact me.
