Curated by Antwaun Sargent, Gagosian opened “Social Abstraction,” a two-part exhibition in Beverly Hills and Hong Kong, featuring works by Kyle Abraham, Kevin Beasley, Allana Clarke, Theaster Gates, Cy Gavin, Alteronce Gumby, Lauren Halsey, Kahlil Robert Irving, Devin B. Johnson, Rick Lowe, Eric N. Mack, Cameron Welch, and Amanda Williams.

“Social Abstraction” showcases a diverse group of Black artists exploring abstract art and social themes. They blend abstraction and representation to create landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits. Some artists use oils and acrylics, while others work with ceramics, hair glue, mosaics, resins, textiles, wigs, and other culturally significant materials.

Gracie and I visiting Callum Innes’s “Turn” exhibition at LA.
Callum Innes, known for his richly detailed paintings, introduced a new circular format Tondo in 2022, inspired by a project to paint a whisky cask for charity. This new shape brought fresh technical and aesthetic challenges, deepening the historical significance of his work. Although Innes continues to apply and remove pigment in his Exposed and Split Paintings and mix substances in his Shellac Paintings, the Tondos required new techniques, including using plywood for quicker work and a smaller brush for more fluid strokes. His latest publication, richly illustrated and featuring critical essays, explores how he’s redefined traditional shapes to create vibrant, immersive art. Innes, a prominent figure in contemporary art, lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Oslo, Norway.
