This painting fought me the whole way through.
There were several points where I was convinced it wasn't working. The flowers felt stiff, the colors felt wrong, and I seriously considered scraping it back and starting over.
But sometimes a painting asks for patience instead of solutions.
After a few steps back, I started to see what it wanted to be: afternoon light, bold color, and that quiet feeling of flowers glowing near a window.
I'm glad I kept going.

This one fought me the whole way.
I scraped it back, repainted the flowers more times than I can count, and honestly didn’t think it was going anywhere.
But after stepping away and looking at it across the room, I realized the light was doing something I loved.
Sometimes a painting doesn’t reveal itself until the very end.

Trying to explain every petal was making my paintings weaker.
This one came together when I stopped describing and started simplifying. Fewer strokes, bigger shapes, more trust that the eye would fill in the rest.
I’m realizing that finding your style probably means being willing to make a lot of bad paintings on purpose while you figure out what actually matters.

Today’s painting took a while to figure out.
The flowers came together early, but the painting itself didn’t feel alive yet. I kept changing the background and eventually realized the problem wasn’t the hydrangeas — it was the space around them.
As soon as the striped tablecloth went in, everything clicked. Suddenly it felt like warm daylight and open air instead of flowers floating in space.
Lately I’ve been learning that finishing a painting is often less about perfecting the subject and more about solving the relationships around it. Every painting teaches me something different.
