Mount Siyeh — my first 10,000-footer. From subalpine conifer to Rocky Mountain cliffs. A mile up the south slope we hit the tantalizing scree, then got swallowed by clouds — thin air, slippery rock, and near-zero visibility. After one more ridge and the simple ritual of adding my stone to the summit cairn, the clouds broke for a split-second and Cracker Lake glowed below. Totally worth it.

The Two Medicine region of Glacier National Park is the park’s southeastern corner. Today, it offers a serene escape from Glacier’s crowds, but its roots run much deeper. For the Blackfeet Nation, this land has long been sacred — a place for vision quests, medicine lodge ceremonies, and spiritual practices that gave the area its name. In 1895, the U.S. government forced the Blackfeet to cede this mountain land. Promises that they could continue to use it were later broken, and today the tribe lives on a reservation along the park’s eastern border. This history raises an important question: are national parks truly “for all the people,” or only for U.S. citizens under federal control?

I made a new friend at the hidden lake overlook. It was a calm and beautiful morning when I was taking in the sunrise and the beauty of the hidden lake when my friend showed up. He walked around for a bit and took in the view. I couldn’t believe he posed for me to take this wonderful shot.

It’s only been a month since I went to Glacier National Park, and I’m already dying to get back. The incredible glacial geology and vast views while hiking, combined with the immaculate ecology, make this the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. I’ll be back soon.
