Why do we work at the Maine State Aquarium? Because we love tide pooling—and found a way to make a career out of it!

We also love helping visitors discover the amazing animals that live in Maine’s intertidal zone. Our touch tank is designed to resemble a rocky tide pool, giving you a chance to get up close to some of the creatures that make their home between the tides.

Sea stars, sea cucumbers, scallops, crabs, anemones, and more are waiting to be discovered!

Come explore with us Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., through September 6.

Worms are wonderful, and how better to celebrate them than at the Wiscasset Wormfest! (yes, that is a thing!) Celebrate All Things Worm-related in historic Wiscasset, the "worm capital of the world." There will be food, fun, and festivities, including Dept of Marine Resources scientists who love worms!

Opening Day is June 17!

Aquarium staff recently provided a sneak peek for a local family, and the child enthusiastically awarded the experience “180 gold (sea) stars.”

As one 2025 visitor described it: "Yes, this aquarium is small—but that’s part of its charm. If … you’re looking for a thoughtfully curated experience where you can get up close to the exhibits, learn something new, support local marine conservation efforts, all in a beautiful location, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Sometimes good things really do come in small packages."

The Maine State Aquarium has fin-tastic news: opening day for the 2026 season is June 17. The aquarium will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on federal holidays.
