The Village Playhouse

The Village Playhouse Your imagination is the only limit to what is possible.

The mission of the Village Playhouse is simple; to provide a place for creativity and learning, to our volunteers and the community we serve. Since our first production in 1978, we have been a place for those interested in theatre to come together and find new ways to express themselves.

Our goal is to help our volunteers push the boundaries of what they thought was possible and to stimulate the

community we serve with thought-provoking productions, both classic and new.

The Village Playhouse strives to be an open and inclusive environment for all who wish to grow through theatre. We aim to produce a wide variety of plays that reflect the multitude of voices that are present in our hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

All. Year. Long. (Say what now!?) 🤯

That’s right: back by popular demand, World Premiere Wisconsin will return in 2026! But hold on to your hats because not only will it be back, but WPW 2.0 will run the whole year, from January 1 - December 31, 2026.

“But wait, how can a festival be a year long?” Glad you asked!

After listening to feedback from all our theaters, we felt that a year-long model would open WPW up to maximum participation and maximum exposure across the state — allowing those in our theater family who produce in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter the flexibility to participate.

We’re excited because we see a year-long festival as an opportunity to build momentum with our devoted audiences — momentum we hope will roll into the ‘26/’27 season and beyond. Audience development around new work will be a core goal of WPW 2.0, and we look forward to expanding our focus on building audience enthusiasm for new work with curated throughlines and trails between productions, special events, and programming throughout 2026.

Sure, a year-long model doesn’t look like anything else out there. But if we made our decisions based on what’s already out there, our inaugural, first-of-its-kind statewide festival never would have existed in the first place! Plus, with the shuttering of so many organizations and festivals supporting new work around the county, why be beholden to replicating existing models? Let’s create a new way of supporting new play development — another bold idea, locally brewed!

Check back with us in 2024 — when we’ll return to uplift new works being done across the state on social media, and share the trajectories of work that debuted in the 2023 festival. Expect more information in the new year on how professional, semi-professional, community, and academic producers, as well as self-produced works, can be a part of WPW 2.0.
