Desert -> Camel -> Joe Camel

Is how I got here.

It makes sense that they banned Joe Camel as a mascot. Because they had absolutely no business making a cartoon camel have s*x appeal, and they knew it.

He’s not my type but like honestly, they made an effort to make this guy the coolest furry on the market. Is there another mascot that could make the same claim? I’m curious now.

Capitalism knows s*x sells. But you know what else they know sells? Furries.

Proof the world loves furries is that Buc-ee’s is opening up locations all over the place. No it’s not just the BBQ or the bathrooms—no one would know about any of that without that derpy looking beaver. Let’s be real.

As someone who exists under the furry umbrella, yes of course I’ve been to a buc-ee’s. Yes the bathrooms are clean and comfortable. But as a vegan there’s not a lot I can eat there that isn’t soda or like. Beaver balls or whatever it’s called, their snack that’s accidentally vegan. Nothing they make that’s fresh is without meat or dairy so aside from the bathrooms and cute mascot it’s kinda overrated.

Plus their copyright battles are as stupid as Disney’s, and now that they’re putting them in further north states (Wisconsin is getting one in Oak Creek apparently) I kind of don’t like them anymore. At first it used to be a cute thing you’d see driving across the country. All these goofy billboards. Even with nothing of interest within it but beaver merch, Buc-ees felt more intriguing when there were fewer locations. Why is it a special oasis if they’re all over the place then?

So, to heck with Buc-ee.

And yeah, to heck with Joe Camel, because the billion dollar ni****ne industry is predatory and monstrous. Buuuuut admittedly? Joe Camel is a symbol of my 90s childhood. So currently in my brain Joe Camel > Buc-ee

Also the quote is from an Atmosphere song that was playing as I began drawing.

Day 243 of
Prompt: Suffocate
Music Selection: Knocked Loose
———

Artist chosen because I like a few handful of their songs and the song “Suffocate” came up in my head when I saw the prompt.

The actual lyrics in the doodle are a line from a Blonde Redhead song that popped into my head. I was contemplating the irony of people who feel suffocated by some aspect of their lives using smoke inhalation as a temporary reprieve. One form of suffocation to soothe the other.

Also I’m having respiratory issues because of asthma (I think?) because of histamine BS triggered by mishaps with perimenopause care, and I have multiple people in my life (including myself) who are currently feeling trapped in some experience or another and are finally acknowledging it’s time to leave. There’s gotta be something in the air, it’s weird how many people’s timelines are running parallel to one another.

Anyway I don’t smoke ci******es and I’m really glad of it, cuz I for sure would have made them a habit by now. I’ll fix the other issues I got going on haha.

Day 242 of
Prompt: Biblically Accurate
Music Selection: Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP
———

Relistening to Eminem and I had three main thoughts. 1. Yes, he is a talented rap lyricist. 2. What an insufferable man. Like he’s definitely grown as a person since this album but he also totally deserves the hate from critics. 3. God how I’ve changed.

I used to listen to Eminem for a year or two when I started college. And I did a deep dive through his whole discography. There was a used music store on State Street (it became a five guys) I would buy CDs at quite frequently. Sometimes grabbing whatever looked interesting, sometimes going after a controversial band or artist I had timidly avoided in high school. Like Limp Bizkit, Marylin Manson, or in this case, Eminem.

I was deeeep in my chronically online edgelord era so it makes a lot of sense that he appealed to me.

It wouldn’t take a long time before I got super into feminism and social justice though, and while I somehow managed to separate the art from the artist, looking back I’m like. Man what the absolute hell though.

Anyway here’s a biblically accurate bologna and cheese sandwich asking you a question.

Day 241 of
Prompt: Circus
Music Selection: [Redacted] song on repeat
———

This figure is from Cirque du Soleil: Quidam, which I fell in love with after I first watched it on TV when I was about 12 or 13.

From a wiki about this particular Cirque storyline:

“The entire show is imagined by a bored girl named Zoé who is alienated and ignored by her parents. She dreams up the whimsical world of Quidam as a means of escaping the monotony of her life.

The show’s title refers to the feature character, a man without a head, carrying an umbrella and a bowler hat. Quidam is said to be the embodiment of both everyone and no one at the same time. According to Cirque du Soleil literature ‘Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past... One who cries out, sings and dreams within us all.’”

So here I’ve drawn Quidam, one of the characters I always really loved the design of. I also listened to a song with a relevant title for this prompt.

Prompt: Wildcard (Artist’s Choice)

I have been feeling under the weather, I think due to perimenopause treatment going awry. Hooray histamines.

And work has been a lot lately too I guess.

So here’s this.

Day 239 of
Prompt: Hagfish
Music Selection: Shuffle
———

Hagfish are really weird and that’s why I like them.

They are smaller predators/scavengers with not much of a cartilaginous skeleton in their body aside from their skull and a “notochord” which is not a true spine. Scientists don’t know much about them, including about their reproduction.

But what we do know is they have two highly effective forms of escape from predators. They are capable of producing an extremely thick and strong slime from mucus glands in their skin, which clogs up the gills of their would-be attackers. Then they wriggle themselves into an overhand knot to escape and also slough off the slime from their own bodies, because it can clog their gills too.

Idk why I’ve always been fascinated by them, since I watched a segment on the discovery channel as a kid.

This doodle shows this one’s ugly ugly face, as well as lyrics from songs by Warthog and Gel which were playing while I drew this, and remnants of that “air that I breathe” song because I saw it on the opposite page and it became re-stuck in my head.

Prompt: Saliva
Music Selection: The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe (on repeat)

Listen.

I’ve been wanting and have had ample opportunity to do something s*xual with these prompts, as many of them are very suggestive. So this was inevitable. And there may be more. I really want there to be anyway…

But I do have to keep it in somewhat good taste given that I’m posting these publicly. I don’t want them to get yeeted into the void. So it’s not….Explicitly explicit.

And hopefully you can tell what’s going on (clue: it’s a hand), and I’m sorry for what’s going on. Especially juxtaposed with the lyrics. Cuz it’s kind of a nice song but in this context it’s, well… They say that good art makes you feel stuff and even I feel uncomfortable. So. Mission successful I guess.

I just had this song pop into my head randomly out of the blue so I knew that’s what I was going to listen to. I don’t even know where I heard it originally, though it was recently. But not recent enough that it should pop into my head. But here we are.

Day 237 of
Prompt: Drunk
Music Selection: Dolly Parton
———

Yesterday was a weird day. Dolly Parton died, as you know. I had just heard of her health issues maybe a day prior. And I thought, I bet we’ll see the day soon, unfortunately. Well s**t.

I don’t need to get into what a loss for humanity it is, but what a gift she was to this world, truly.

Anyway this prompt was “drunk” and I don’t do it often, but every once in a while I enjoy being drunk. Not alone, but in decent social settings like shows or festivals or other places where my loosened social inhibitions can make for fun interactions.

Here’s a drunk null, somewhat distorted, because alcohol.

Day 236 of
Prompt: Spotted Cuscus
Music Selection: None, just some true crime YouTube video
———

I picked this as a prompt last year when I was generating the list because these little dudes look cool. I don’t think I did them justice. They’re some kind of marsupial but other than that I don’t know anything about them.

Almost drew a cartoon cuscus eating couscous but I don’t think I can portray couscous in a way that’s obviously couscous.
