Pure grit and raw speed. During the 77th Bonneville Speed Week (August 1–7, 2026), land-speed legend Danny Thompson piloted the famous #75 Don Ferguson Racing Streamliner to capture the fastest overall vehicle honors of the entire meet.

The road to the top was pure drama. On opening weekend, the car suffered a violent 369 MPH tire explosion. After the crew spent 48 hours thrashing to rebuild the damaged bodywork, Danny strapped back in on Tuesday morning, August 4, 2026, and laid down the definitive run:

• Mile 5 Official Average: 396.949 MPH
• Exit Speed: A screaming 406.249 MPH

With this run, Ferguson Racing locked down the prestigious HOT ROD Magazine Trophy for the second consecutive year. By doing so, Danny matched the historic back-to-back 1959–1960 feat of his legendary father, Mickey Thompson.

👇 Drop a comment below to salute Danny and the Ferguson crew for surviving the blast and taking the trophy! 🏆

Bonneville World Finals 2026 is almost here

The Southern California Timing Association is bringing the final major land speed event of the 2026 Bonneville season to the salt. According to SCTA's own official event page, technical inspection opens September 25th at 9:00 a.m., with racing running September 26th through 29th, 2026.

SCTA is the oldest operating racing organization in the United States, formed all the way back in 1937 by a handful of Southern California car clubs. Since then, SCTA and its sister organization Bonneville Nationals Inc. have run the World Finals and Speed Week every year, certifying land speed records across hot rods, streamliners, lakesters, belly tankers, motorcycles, and even diesel trucks.

If you are thinking about heading out to watch, here is what SCTA lists for spectators this year. A full event Salt Pass Pin costs 60 dollars, or you can grab a single day pass for 25 dollars, both available for purchase at the event itself. Racers looking to enter must be current SCTA or BNI members, pass vehicle safety inspection, and complete a driver medical form before they are allowed on the course.

This event caps off a season that already saw a huge headline. Back in August, Andy Green, the only person alive who has driven a car faster than the speed of sound, set a new world record for a hydrogen powered internal combustion vehicle at 406.32 mph in the JCB Hydromax, right here on this same salt.

World Finals is where the last records of the year get chased before winter closes the flats down again. If you love this place the way we do, this is the week to watch.

Getting a car to 500 mph is only half the problem.

Stopping it is the part that comes next.
At Bonneville, a high speed car cannot simply rely on conventional brakes. At extreme speed, the brakes can become overwhelmed by heat and the enormous amount of energy that has to be dissipated.

That is why parachutes are one of the most important braking systems in land speed racing.

Once the driver finishes the timed run, the engine is shut down or power is reduced and a braking parachute is deployed. The chute creates enormous aerodynamic drag, rapidly taking speed out of the car. At very high speeds, that aerodynamic drag is far more useful than trying to make the wheel brakes do everything.

But the parachute is not the only line of defense.
Cars can also use wheel brakes as the vehicle slows to lower speeds. Modern record cars may be designed with mechanical or friction braking systems as a backup in case a parachute fails. JCB's 2026 Hydromax, for example, used twin parachutes plus a friction braking system specifically as additional protection.

And history shows exactly why redundancy matters.
During Craig Breedlove's 1964 Bonneville record run, both of his parachutes separated from the car. He then had to rely on wheel brakes that were only designed for much lower speeds. The brakes overheated and failed to stop him normally, sending him beyond the course.

Art Arfons experienced an equally terrifying situation after his 536.71 mph run in 1964. His first parachute failed, his reserve later disintegrated, and his hydraulic brakes were also unusable. He eventually brought the Green Monster to a stop after travelling roughly another half mile.

So how does a 500 mph car stop?

First, air.
Then, parachutes.
Then, brakes.
And finally, a very long piece of salt.

At 500 mph, stopping isn't an afterthought.
It's part of the engineering from the very beginning.

Would you trust one parachute or two at 500 mph? 🏁
