Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats look like another planet.
A blinding white expanse stretching about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide — a remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville. The hard salt crust can reach nearly 5 feet thick in the center and thins to less than an inch at the edges. This is the same surface where land-speed records have been set for over a century.
It’s pure magic for photos… and surprisingly dangerous.
Vehicles regularly get stuck in soft mud near the edges. The salt is highly corrosive. Extreme heat, intense glare, limited cell service, and seasonal flooding all make it easy to get into trouble if you’re not careful. Always check conditions, stay off when wet, and never ignore the signs.

The Mile High Attitude crew decided to still go have some fun in Wendover despite World of Speed being cancelled and sent us some pics from road’s end. It’s unfortunate that something so beautiful is still so devastating.

We were contacted by the BLM early yesterday morning and told that because of the standing water on the salt flats that even our officials were not allowed to go out to inspect the drying anymore and today looks about the same. So it looks like we would not have been able to even step foot on the salt flats until tomorrow possibly Friday at the earliest. It was a hard decision but apparently the right one.

The silver lining of the bad luck for the 40th World of Speed is that if the salt flats continue to dry out properly Course 1/FIA course will most likely be the best track we’ve had to race on all year! So everybody keep your fingers crossed for the SCTA and the upcoming World Finals event September 26th-29th! We hope to see you all there one more time this year before the season is over!🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

It is with much sadness that we report the cancellation of the 40th World of Speed.

Unfortunately, there was no possible way to safely get trucks and trailers off the end of the road; the water is 8-10 inches deep there.

The first mile of course 1 is really rough and wet there’s a slight possibility for it to dry out the section between the 2 1/2-3 in time to prep the course for racing but there is lots of water just 200 feet off the mountain side of course 1.

Course 2 is trashed past the 2 and soaked with lots of standing water.

‼️update: World of Speed is canceled.

Dave Droescher was able to take a little walk out down track 2 until roughly the bend in the d**e. As you can see things are drying out albeit not as quickly as we’d hoped for. Dennis Sullivan and Justin McAllister will be going out midday tomorrow to do a full assessment and make a decision on whether or not we think the track will dry out enough for us to be able to work it properly. Stay tuned and pray to the salt gods that Mother Nature cooperates 🙏🏼

‼️update: World of Speed is canceled

If you’re bouncing around weather apps like I am: make sure to check more than just the initial forecast. I wish they had different icons for “light drizzle” and “monsoon rains” 😆 Yes it is currently a bit too damp. This is supposed to be the biggest dump of all the predicted precipitation. Followed by sunshine into the evening and a bit of cloudiness moving in through the night. Our drag crew is out there on standby ready to roll as soon as possible.

Check those temps 👀
Though it says rain, it’s not predicting much. Nor does rain in Wendover guarantee it’ll hit the salt. A semi damp surface drags better.

6 more days!
