FYI... When we create an event on FB around one of Russ' shows, we invite many or all of you to attend, with the understanding that some of you live quite some distance from the venue. We also understand that, on occasion, some of you travel to the Raleigh area and have asked us to notify you if there is a show coinciding with your trip.

We would like to see every one of you in the audience at one of Russ' shows, but we know that can't happen. So, we create the event for those of you who are local and for those of you who may be in the area or would like to travel to the venue just for the show.😀

Either way, Russ and Shaky Legz Music appreciate ALL of you whether you come to a live show, stream or download a song, or buy an album. Your support of local small venues and local independent singer/songwriters and musicians is what keeps the music alive. A few months ago, Russ played a "Christmas in July" event at the Zebulon Farm Fresh Market. Once again, he was approached by several Market vendors and customers who asked why he had not done a Christmas album. After discussing the idea, we decided to do it.

So... although it be a little late in the year to start a project like this, we'll be going in the studio this afternoon to determine the feasibility of recording a 10 song album of spiritual and secular Christmas music and releasing it by the first week in December. To meet that date, the album will be recorded, mixed/mastered and produced at our Shaky Legz Music Studio, with CDs printed and distributed from our Wendell, NC location. We regret that, being so close to Christmas, the album will not be available for online streaming and downloading (with the possible exception of a few selected tracks).. maybe next year!

So... if we determine this afternoon that the project can be completed and released by early December, we will be making the album available this year on CD only and in a limited supply. If you are interested in acquiring a CD, once it is produced, please make your request by comment to this post on Facebook or by emailing your request to [email protected], or you can let us know in person at any of our upcoming November shows. Those who request early will receive a surprise bonus!

Thanks to those of you who inspired and encouraged us to move forward with this endeavor! We'll keep you posted...

Fall is officially here and the available dates for "Russ James - Singer/Songwriter" shows (both venue and private) are getting fewer and fewer. BUT... there are still several weekend dates available between November 1st and December 31st!

So, if you're having a holiday event or party during that time period, and you're thinking that live entertainment is too expensive, think again. It's more affordable than you think. In addition, Russ's shows are more than just music. The shows include stories, trivia, audience participation, percussion for kids, CD giveaways and more... including songs from the soundtrack of your life. Set lists are customized to ensure that the show is family friendly and lyric appropriate.

This small, but acoustically sound and cozy, studio is home to the recording, songwriting, guitar teaching, publishing, rehearsing, and gig staging side of Shaky Legz Music. The financial and management side of Shaky Legz Music is comprised of a cluttered wooden desk and some file boxes... not very interesting, so we're showing you the studio😁.

Though the studio is small, there are within... 6 acoustic guitars, 1 twelve string guitar, 1 classical guitar, 6 electric guitars (hollow and solid body), 1 bass guitar, 1 mandolin and 1 ukulele. There are also 7 acoutic and electric guitar amplifiers, many different effects pedals, condenser mics, dynamic mics, instrument mics, headphones, music stands, one 76-key keyboard, many different Latin and African percussion instruments, harmonicas and 1 recorder. There is also one 16-track digital recording deck, one portable 8-track recording deck, one PC based recording package with software and USB interface to guitar and vocal mic, one stereo cassette recorder, one dual stereo cassette deck for playback and a vinyl turntable with USB interface. There are studio monitors and recording accessories galore.

The studio cannot accommodate a band with full drum kit. But, t can easily accommodate a singer-songwriter, duo, trio, vocal quartet with accompanist...or even a parent or grandparent who would like to record an audio journal or family history to pass down to their descendants recorded in their own voice. (Note: It's hard for me to remember what my mother's voice sounded like.)

So here are a few inside looks at Shaky Legz Studio... come by and visit sometime... just call ahead first. ☺

Hi Everybody!

I hope everyone is having a great week!

This post is an FYI to everyone who has "Liked" my FB music pages "Shaky Legz Productions" and "Shaky Legz Records". These two pages have been closed and deleted effective immediately. All content... info, posts, photos, etc., that would ordinarily have appeared on these two pages, will now be included on the page "Shaky Legz Music and Studio". The consolidation of this information on a single FB site will make it easier for us to manage and easier for those of you who follow live entertainment and recording by Shaky Legz Music to find.

So... there are now only two related music sites providing info and accepting posts for Shaky Legz Music and Russ James. Again, the pages are: "Shaky Legz Music and Studio" and "Russ James, Singer-Songwriter". Lynn James, as General Manager of Shaky Legz Music, will also be an admin and post, on occasion, as she sees fit, on the " Shaky Legz Music and Studio" page..
If you have not liked or followed the "Shaky Legz Music and Studio" page or the "Russ James, Singer-Songwriter" page, I hope you will check out, and consider liking and following, both pages. We'll try to keep the content interesting and up to date.

About a year and a half ago, I checked prices in the Raleigh area for beginning guitar lessons. Having not taught lessons for several years, I was surprised that lessons were so expensive. I thought, "How can parents with more than one child even think about giving their kids music lessons?"

So, I decided to teach a few 4-5 student classes in my home studio (Shaky Legz Music) for members of my Church who would like to learn, but didn't want to make a monthly financial commitment until they saw if it was something they really wanted to do. The class was 45-minutes once a week and there was no charge. The beginning course would last for six months.

Well, I hope a few students learned a little about basic guitar... but I saw a few issues that made the class environment less than effective for me as a teacher and for many students.

The issues were:
1 - We often ended up practicing in class with the students who didn't practice at home. This took valuable time away from students who were ready for new material.
2 - Everyone learns and progresses at a different speed. Either the slower student gets overwhelmed or the faster student gets bored... or both.
3 - A "free" lesson doesn't really give the student (or parents of younger students) the incentive to attend their weekly lesson. This leaves the teacher wondering who is really serious about learning guitar and who isn't.

Now, a year later, and having a more concrete handle on my schedule... and having learned quite a bit from the guitar class experience, I have decided to return to teaching beginning, one-on-one guitar lessons in the Shaky Legz Music 🎶 Studio.

The lessons will be private one-on-one, 40 minute lessons once a week. The lessons will include, basic music theory, scales, chord progressions and rhythm styles and finger-styles geared toward vocal accompaniment.
