Fusion: Mixed-Race & Identity at Wellesley Fusion provides a space for students of mixed race to share their experiences with each other and with the greater Wellesley population.

Fusion is an organization of students dedicated to raising awareness of mixed-race/identity issues, and cultural intersectionality and providing a supportive safe space for Wellesley community members of mixed-race. There are certain aspects of being mixed race that make it a unique and distinct category of identity – for instance the experience of “racial spying” that many people of mixed race ar

e familiar with, struggles with identifying and the pressure to choose one race over the other, picking multiple boxes or being forced to choose just one, racial identity issues and up-front comments on physical appearance and not to mention a very unique perspective/experience of racial privilege and the world. The percentage of mixed race students at Wellesley is increasing: over 5% of the class of 2013 identifies as either biracial or multiracial (http://www.wellesley.edu/admission/admission/statistics.html), and over 8% of the class of 2014 identifies as either biracial or multiracial (http://web.wellesley.edu/web/Admission/GetToKnowUs/statistics.psml). Mixed race relationships and marriages have been on the rise for decades. The United States census only recently (since the year 2000) allowed for citizens to check more than one box in the race category; more and more people every year are becoming comfortable with identifying as mixed race.
