ON WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 28, AMERICA LOST A MUSICAL TREASURE TO CANCER AND I LOST A DEAR FRIEND.

Lou Pallo was not widely known to the public. But to Keith Richards, Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Jimmy Page, and so many others, he was a genuine guitar hero. “The Man of a Million Chords,” Keef called him. As Les Paul’s rhythm guitarist for 22 years in the Les Paul Trio, his timing was so perfect they never needed a drummer.

I will soon be writing a more personal tribute to Lou for our blog page on the SST website. In the meantime, I’d like to share with you an interview with Lou conducted by SST’s Steven Acker a couple of years ago. We all send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the Pallo family.
--JOHN HANTI, November 4, 2020

Lou Pallo was Les Paul’s close friend and right-hand man in the Les Paul Trio for over 28 years. He was Les’ most enduring bandmate and he is credited with inspiring Les to get back into music after his divorce from partner Mary Ford. Les’ decades-long string of hits on the pop charts had come...

ON THIS 51st ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND OF WOODSTOCK, SST owner John Hanti relives his most unforgettable coming-of-age story during his “three days of peace and music.” It is an especially poignant memory in 2020 because this summer’s crop of young people now coming of age has no live music to enjoy, no peace to celebrate, and precious few good times to ease the sorrow of isolation.

We hope you enjoy John’s story and perhaps share it with your children to give them a ray of hope for tomorrow. May the joy and adventure of live music return in the Spring, may our kids be allowed to be kids again, and may they soon have an abundance of new adventures and memories to cherish forever, just as we cherish ours.

This is why Woodstock still matters: because we are still tribal beings, and our tribes still matter.

Yasgur’s Farm was like a battlefield in ruins. The few weary soldiers who survived somehow mustered the strength to shuffle up the hill as t

A Personal Note from The President

Oober 1, 2018 From the Desk of John Hanti—Owner of SST Studios and Rentals. Dear Friends of SST, I am reaching out to you today to express my personal, heartfelt gratitude for your continued loyalty and faith in us throughout the years. We’ve shared many great times together, and we’ve endured a few tough times, too. I am happy to say that we have prevailed. SST is now stronger and better than ever. In fact, we have a brand new website! SST has been serving the needs of the entertainment industry since 1982. We grew from humble beginnings on 25th street in Manhattan (ironically, SIR now owns and occupies that very building today). When I made that decision to take a leap of faith and cross the river, we were renting out 15 passenger vans at the time. The cost of keeping them in the city and paying the tickets was too much to bear, so we moved out of the city to Weehawken. I had high hopes that the move would work out. Providence smiled, and we made a go of it. Our client base then was mostly British. We were the touring company of choice for the second British invasion—Motorhead, Black Sabbath, the Smiths, New Order, Siouxie, and the Banshees, and The Police, In those days, it was the band, its backline, and more often than not, an American driver/tour manager/sound engineer all in one, driving from club to club, bringing their new music to our shores The first great American artists to use the new facility were Winger, Living Color and Lenny Kravitz. We were off to a good start, but we needed to keep building and improving. The years rolled by. We kept buying backline and adding more vehicles. This led us into cartage, 15 passenger van rentals, storage, and of course, my beloved recording studio (now dubbed IIWII Recording). Today, a new generation of talented and loyal young folks continue to lead our boutique efforts. Last December, we provided the backline for the 2017 iHeart Radio Jingle Ball tour of the U.S. SST was the sole backline provider for the entire tour—arguably the most demanding and extensive backline requirement tour of its kind. Our stage crew performed magnificently and all dates went off perfectly. Since those early days, we have entertained Destiny’s Child, John Mayer, Alicia Keys, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, Jon Bon Jovi and yes, even The Rolling Stones in our studio, either for recording or rehearsal or for video—some all at the same time--without anyone ever knowing they were here at all. The studio has recorded some of the most prestigious artists in the world, as well as orchestral and big band work for television. We continue to keep a low public profile. Our market is the industry. You won’t be seeing SST on ET or Inside Edition if I can help it. We depend on you--our clients--to spread the word of this little train that could. We still do the best job possible job for each artist that comes through our doors. We still take a decidedly non-corporate approach to business. Here at SST, it’s still about personal relationships and one-on-one service. I invite you to visit our new website. I think you, too, will be proud of our improvements and our growth. After all, it was all of you who helped to make it possible. We are so proud that you have been part of the family of artists we love so much to serve. Our complete line of services now include custom backline, transport, cartage, storage, and rehearsal, along with state-of-the-art sound and recording. The recording studio boasts one of the only complete Focusrite Studio consoles in the world. We have also added a private artist lounge with full bathroom and shower, including a makeup station and wardrobe area. Our newest addition, to be completed soon, is a private, self-contained, 2000 square foot dance area with a 40-foot mirror wall. All this within the same building, with all areas still controlled by the artists. To my old friends: I am still around. You can still reach me 24/7, as always. Remember the days of “We never close” and “The light at the end of the tunnel?” Well, those days are not gone. Billy Perez, Jeff Simoni, John DeSalvo—Dorothy and I, too--are here to serve and help you in any way we can. For new friends to come, I look forward to meeting you, to hosting more great new music and great performances, and to continue working with you now and in the years ahead. Thanks for doing business with us.

Sincerely, John Hanti President, SST Studios and Rentals Please join our online SST community.
