FloatLife Fest 3: The Year Onewheel Racing Became a Sport

The first two FloatLife Fests felt like a gathering. FloatLife Fest 3 added the feels of a sport.

Attendance had outgrown last year's venue, and we made the jump to REEB Ranch. For the first time, the crowd was measured in hundreds, not dozens. The energy was different. The stakes were higher. The future of what riders were going to do on their boards was starting to take shape.

This was also the year we introduced Dual Slalom—a format that would become a cornerstone of competitive Onewheel racing.

And then there were the battles. The old guard versus the next generation. So many new faces on the start line!

Raquel McCosker took down Rachel Cecil. Jeff McCosker beat reigning Race for the Rail Champion Dom Williams. Looking back, those results feel almost impossible. Dom would go on to become one of the most dominant racers in the sport, and this may very well have been the last time Rachel Cecil—the GOAT—stood on the losing side of a race ever.

More than any single result, FLF3 was the year the formats, the competition, and the culture began to crystallize. The blueprint for modern Onewheel racing was being written in real time.

FloatLife Fest 3 wasn't just another event. It was the year everything changed.

Ten years later, we're bringing the legendary Donuts & Beers Race back for FloatLife Fest X. Some traditions are too ridiculous to leave in the past. 🍩🍺

It was May 2016, Onewheel Racing didn’t exist, much less FloatLife Fest.

At Battle of the Broad, a paddleboard race put on by FLF race and media directors, Chelsea and John Grace, a bunch of Onewheel riders showed up. The SUP crowd and Onewheel crowd felt like kindred spirits back then, adventurous and always looking for a good excuse to have fun.

As everyone swapped stories after the race, an idea was hatched: "What if we set up a course and raced these things?” So we did.

The format was simple and terrible. Heats of three riders battled it out for a spot in the final four. The championship round required competitors to eat a donut, complete a lap, and shotgun a beer at the finish line. It was awful. It was glorious.

And just like that, Onewheel racing was born. Onewheel Battle of the Broad

Back at FloatLife Fest 2, we lined up for the worlds first-ever mass start Onewheel race. Nobody really knew what was about to happen. Trepidation was high and the anticipation on that start line was thick.

The race went amazing and we knew straight away the mass start event was going to become a staple of racing moving forward.

A few storylines were starting to emerge. The friendly rivalry between Raquel McCosker and Rachel Cecil was beginning to heat up and would become one of the defining battles of the early years. Meanwhile, a new generation was quietly making themselves known. For the first time, the young guns started creeping onto the scene, led by a rising Dominique Williams finding a spot on the podium with Jeff Mccosker and Bodhi Harrison.

Looking back now, it's wild to see how many future legends were packed into one start line.

Just another chapter in the decade long FloatLife Fest history.

Stay tuned for more chapters in the FLF story!

A little slice of Onewheel history right here!

This was the world's first Onewheel Freestyle Competition, held at the world's first Onewheel Festival. Back then, nobody really knew what a freestyle contest would look like. Riders showed up (the McCosker’s even made it their honeymoon), got creative, and helped build a format that would influence years of competitions to come.

Just one of the many "firsts" that happened at FloatLife Fest over the last 10 years.

We've been digging through the archives and will be sharing more of those moments soon.

How many people watching this owned a Onewheel +??? We bet not many!

At the time the XRs launch seemed modest, but the fact is it changed everything!

Back then, a 4-mile race was considered ridiculous. The climbs were solid, batteries were stretched to their limits, and making it to the finish line wasn't guaranteed.

But for the first time, we saw what was possible. The XR wasn't just a new board, it was a key that unlocked new terrain, bigger rides, and a glimpse of where the sport could go.

Looking back, it wasn't just another race.

It was the moment we realized this thing was going somewhere.
