In work, traces of Edward Hopper’s emotional solitude meet something closer to the observational intimacy of Vivian Maier. The result is a body of work preoccupied with disconnection, stillness, and the subtle ache of modern life.

Not loneliness exactly.

Something stranger: the feeling of being surrounded, yet unseen.

Colonna Contemporary will be curating the 2nd chapter of On the Outside Looking In. The drop will feature 3 single edition works, each with corresponding fine art print. Link in bio. Dm for inquiries

Super excited to share that the very first drop since closing the gallery and pivoting to curatorial studio, will be with one of my favorite artists and dear friend, Naty. Naty aka Natascia Mercurio, is a Milan-based, Italian fine art photographer.

With her trademark teal/orange finish, Naty documents the human condition like no one else. Inspired by greats such as Hopper and Maier, Naty’s work is a painstaking look at the isolation of crowded places.

Basilicata (Lucania) is the last bastion of Italian authenticity. Tucked quietly between Puglia, Campania and Calabria, it is one of the best kept secrets.

Took my daughter today to visit the town of Aliano, one of my absolute favorite towns. Besides the breathtaking Calanchi (Badlands), Aliano is where Carlo Levi, based his masterpiece, Christ Stopped in Eboli (Cristo sì è Fermato a Eboli).

In the days of fascism in Italy, many leftist activists were sent in exile. As such, Levi, who was a doctor, writer and politician from Turin, was sent to Aliano.

In this new reality, shaped by peasant culture and abject rural poverty, Levi wrote his masterpiece. The title hits really hard, implying that this part of the Italian south was so poor, that not even Christ made it this far, rather, he stopped in nearby Eboli.

Levi actually fell in love with the place and became a dedicated advocate for the local peasants, providing medical care for the community.

Today there are many points of interest in town that one can visit, including Levi’s house, museum etc. Christ Stopped in Eboli was one of my favorite books growing up as it was incredibly moving.

Last few days in Puglia. As sad as this trip was, saying good bye to my dad, it was restorative in many ways. A reconnection of some sort with the idea of home we carry within ourselves.
