I’m afraid that I have always been so focused on the beautiful embrace and on the geometry of Cyd’s gorgeous legs, that I did not notice how Gene is kneeling on his left knee. This white scarf portion of the Broadway Melody Ballet in Singin’ in the Rain is, as Gene said, intended to suggest lo******ng. The sequence was considered so steamy that it was cut from the picture in several countries, including Spain. Would that some contemporary directors would see the value in this kind of “lo******ng.”

LOVE!!!!!

This is one of my favorite photos of Gene in motion. It is the “Tra-la-la” number from An American in Paris. The song was composed by George and Ira Gershwin for the 1922 Broadway show For Goodness Sake, but it was not used. So this is the first usage. It is a great costume for Gene: the white “singlet” under his blue Oxford shirt, khaki pants turned up, white socks, and the famous loafers. He is perfectly still in the photo (obviously), yet you feel the sideways momentum as his body leans into the movement. Again, the movie clip gives us the joy and intensity of the number, but the photograph captures a moment we might otherwise miss.
