We are excited to welcome our new piano teacher, Heidi Lueck! She still has openings for piano lessons on Friday afternoons. Registration on our website.
Heidi was born in New Orleans, LA, when Harry Connick Jr. recorded his first studio album. She began taking piano lessons during summer visits to her grandparents’ home at age 5 and had regular lessons at age 9.
In high school, she studied under H. Thomas Hurley. While attending St. Norbert College, she studied with Elaine Moss, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Humanities.
She opened her own private piano studio in 2001 and continued studying under Arthur Cohrs. Heidi credits Harry Connick, Jr., George Winston, and Frank Sinatra as most influential in her love of music. She has performed throughout northeast Wisconsin.

A group of concerned citizens has brought forth a proposal to the City of Waupaca to consider renovating the vacant former St. Mary Magdalene’s church on Division Street, creating space for after school and summer Arts Programming. This location is perfect as it is adjacent to the Waupaca Rec Center, which provides sports programming for kids; it is also convenient for kids to access as it is where the after school bus stops.
Renovating this building will be a big challenge, but it is structurally sound, and very doable, at a cost.... there is a lot of interest in doing this because it is a beautiful space with a lot of room and potential for not only arts programming, but makers space, performance space, community space, and more.
The City Council has given us 6 months to flesh out our vision and do a feasibility study to find out if our community is up for this challenge. It will cost an estimated 1.3-1.6 million dollars to renovate the building and set it on track to be sustainable as an arts center. A task force has been set up to guide the feasibility study, which will take about 3 months to complete.
If the study shows that indeed our community can support raising this kind of money to “save St. Mary’s,” then we will go back to City Council to see if they want this project to proceed. The alternate fate for St. Mary’s would be in the hands of a developer, who may decide to raze the building and build new housing on the site. We do need decent housing in Waupaca, too.....It will be up to City Council to decide what is best for our community.
If for what ever reason the Arts Rec Center cannot happen on the St. Mary’s site, we will proceed with an alternative site. So stay tuned for more information and updates as we proceed with plans to enrich our community, one way or another!
