Jazz at The Caspe Terrace

Jazz at The Caspe Terrace What can you expect? They also compose their own fantastic repertoire, and play a passel of Misha Mengelberg tunes, many dating back to the fifties.

Abe Goldstein and Jackie Garnett are pleased to announce a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of internationally-renowned jazz artists in the intimate setting of The Caspe Terrace in Waukee. April 9:

*** The ICP Orchestra ***

http://www.icporchestra.com/

Pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink bring the cream of the crop of the Dutch jazz scene for ICP Orchestra's first ever performance in Io

wa. Here's what trumpeter Dave Douglas has to say about ICP: "These musicians can swing like mad when they want to, and can play the most sensitive cafe ballad at the drop of a hat. But the crux of what they do, as the name implies, is improvisation. And they do it as well as anyone out there." May 5:

*** Lee Shaw Duo ***

At age 85, Lee Shaw is keeping the jazz piano tradition alive. Lee definitely bridges the generation gap in jazz. She was a former student of Oscar Peterson and a former teacher of John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood). She palys standards. She writes her own tunes. Most of all, she swings in the style of the great pianists that have inspired her - Oscar Peterson, Elmo Hope, Tadd Dameron and others. Lee will be joined by long-time associate Rich Syracuse on bass. It's not her age that will amaze you, it's her playing. June 4:

*** Dave Liebman Duo ***

http://www.daveliebman.com/home.php

This will be a first of saxophonist Dave Liebman, who cut his teeth in the bands of Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. He has never played in Central Iowa in his 40-plus years as a jazz musician nor has he ever performed in a duo setting with his long-time associate, guitarist Vic Juris. having recently been awarded the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master title, Dave's recent recording of Ornette Coleman compositions is topping the jazz charts throughout Europe and the U.S. Expect to be blown away as Dave blows through an evening of standards, jazz classics and originals on soprano and tenor saxophone. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are followed by a meet-the-artist reception. Tickets are $25 for each performance in advance and $30 at the door. Student pricing is available. To order tickets, send checks to Abe Goldstein, 4011 Plainview Drive, Des Moines, IA 50311. Seating is limited to 150 people. For more information, contact Ave at 515.279.6452 or [email protected]

BOTTOM LINE: I’ll admit that I was totally unfamiliar with vocalist Lisa Rich before hearing I Still Rise. Now I am enamored by her — by her choice of tunes, by her arrangements, by the sensitive support of the musicians she selected for this date (bassist Drew Gress, pianist Marc Copland and trumpeter Dave Ballou) and most all by the pure warmth, agility and beauty of her voice. If you are a fan of vocalists such as the late Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan and Shirley Horn you will be a fan of Lisa Rich!

BOTTOM LINE: Jazz bassoon may be an acquired taste, but jazz that swings with soul and sophistication is a staple for any appetite. That’s what Reunion is all about. Bassoonist Michel Rabinowitz reunites with pianist Michael Jefry Stevens after more than three decades to remind us about the timelessness of good jazz and the value of musical camaraderie.

ARTISTS RECORDING COLLECTIVE (RELEASED JUNE 15, 2026) Yusef Lateef, Ken McIntyre, Illinois Jacquet and other saxophonists have added the bassoon to their reed arsenal, but there are only a handful …

BOTTOM LINE: Thirty years ago, drummer Lou Grassi, saxophonist Sabir Mateen, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter and bassist William Parker met for an informal jam session in New York City. The energy, creativity and passion these four had (and still do) for the art and craft of free improvisation is evident on Keeping It In Context, a recording from their ad hoc meeting in 1996 which is now available for the first time.

BOTTOM LINE: Fans of modern jazz will want to check out the coming together of three masters of that genre — saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore. They merge their individual voices into a cohesive sound that soars, glides and dives, much like the bird they adopted for the name of the ensemble – The Phoenix Trio.

GIANT STEP ARTS (RELEASED JUNE 19, 2026) Professor Harold Hill ‘s tip to traveling salespeople in the The Music Man was simple — “You gotta’ know the territory.” Without a doubt, the members of The…

BOTTOM LINE: Like magnets, Ivo Perelman, Matthew Shipp, William Parker and Bobby Kapp seamlessly come together and pull apart on Synesthesia. The recording showcases the dichotomy that characterize the best of collective improvisation — relaxing and bustling, structured and clairvoyant, familiar and unfamiliar.

BOTTOM LINE: Lucy Yeghaizaryan is a converocalist, meaning she has the unique ability to make each song she approaches an intimate conversation with her listeners. On her new release Hey Love! she puts that magical touch on ten familiar and not so familiar tunes. Her warmth and charm, plus the accompaniment of a stellar ensemble, makes Hey Love! a welcome addition to her growing discography.

LA RESERVE (RELEASED JUNE 19, 2026) On her last recording, Beyond the Golden Door, Armenian born Lucy Yeghaizaryan brought her intimate and elegant vocal styling to the music of her culture. With h…
