10 days, 100 films, 50 filmmakers: During the 10 days of the festival we show nearly 100 films, representing the best of American independent and international cinema. We also spotlight some of Maine and New England's most exciting and innovative filmmakers. More than just movies: Audiences also have opportunities to meet and talk with some of the people behind the movies – directors, producers, w

riters, musicians. Every year we honor members of the independent film industry whose contributions to cinema deserve recognition. Our honored guests and visiting filmmakers host panel discussions as well as informal Q&A sessions, giving the audiences an incredible chance to hear about the art of film from those on the front lines. MIFF's special guests have included Roger Deakins with the inaugural Karl Struss Legacy Award for Distinguished Achievement in Cinematography, as well as Mid-Life Achievement Award winners Lauren Hutton (MIFF 2017), Gabriel Byrne (MIFF 2016), Michael Murphy (MIFF 2015), Glenn Close (MIFF 2014), Keith Carradine (MIFF 2013), Thelma Schoonmaker (MIFF 2012), Malcolm McDowell (MIFF 2011), Jay Cocks (MIFF 2010), John Turturro (MIFF 2008), Bud Cort (MIFF 2007), Walter Hill (MIFF 2006), Lili Taylor (MIFF 2005 "Pre" Mid-Life Achievement Award Honoree), Ed Harris (MIFF 2004), Peter Fonda (MIFF 2003), Jonathan Demme (MIFF 2002), Sissy Spacek (MIFF 2001), Terrence Malick (MIFF 2000), and Jos Stelling (MIFF 1999).

A throwback and crowd favorite from last year's festival, here's a chance to see 76 Days Adrift right here in Maine! Whether you missed it last year, or want to relive the harrowing tale, this film is best experienced on a big screen.

A Maine story, coming home.

Steven Callahan's true tale of survival — 76 days adrift alone in the Atlantic — screens right here at Harbor Theater in Boothbay Harbor. Told first-person, direct to camera, with recreations that put you in the raft with him. This isn't a film you watch so much as one you survive alongside him.

A Conversation with Christine Vachon 🎬

At this year's festival, producer Christine Vachon received the MIFF29 Achievement Award and sat down with Julia Dunlavey of The Maine Playweek for a wide-ranging conversation about her remarkable career and the changing landscape of cinema.

Vachon reflects on her body of work, the influence of living in New York and having access to the arts, the evolving relationship between theatrical releases and streaming, and why independent cinemas are experiencing a revival in New York City.

The conversation is especially timely as Vachon prepares to receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the Academy's 17th annual Governors Awards this November.

Telling a compelling story in a short amount of time is no easy task. Cloudbound Eagle told an emotional tale of friendship, grief, and acceptance in just 12 minutes—awarding them the Tourmaline Prize for Maine-made short this year.

It's always our pleasure to showcase stories filmed in our great state every year. Maine has so much to offer visually from the coastline to the thick forests and everywhere in between. This year's Feature Tourmaline Prize winner certainly took every opportunity to highlight the beauty of Maine. The story was also well crafted and executed.
