Atlantic Music Festival prides itself on creating genuine connection between its faculty members and participants. Our community welcomes musicians from around the world to come together to perform and build friendships that will last a lifetime.

Violinist, Maddie Rowe, shares her experiences connecting with her peers while rehearsing chamber music:
"I really loved rehearsing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 1 in F Major these past few weeks! Each rehearsal has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’ve really enjoyed playing music with these people. This group is so passionate about music and it truly shows, and I appreciate how each person contributed their thoughts and ideas about the piece. It’s also fun just cracking jokes and getting to know everyone in this group. Lauren, Aidan, and Liliko are brilliantly talented musicians, as well as thoughtful, inspiring, and encouraging people. It’s been a blast!"

Composer, Zac Dulkin, talks about one of his favorite parts of campus life; sharing a meal with his friends:
"Mealtimes at AMF are a chance to unwind with the friends you'll make here! The schedule at AMF leads people to eat together at roughly similar times, so every meal is a chance to check in with your friends about the day. Prepare for having nostalgia for meals at Dana Dining!"

Pianist, Muyuan Liu, comments on the collaborative environment between faculty and participants during masterclasses:
"Today, Dr. Park led our second studio class. 7 students played different pieces, and everyone shared their suggestions and feedback on each other's performances. I feel this is a loving and supportive group, and I really enjoy the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where we can learn a lot."

Here at Atlantic Music Festival, we foster an environment where participants build the skills to find fulfillment in music through diverse course offerings and faculty perspectives. 🎼

Violinist, Maddie Rowe on faculty member, Kyung Sun Lee's Violin Masterclass:

"Today Prof. Kyung Sun Lee led an amazing masterclass! She gave many helpful suggestions and takeaways, including making sure you can be heard when playing piano and pianissimo. This was super helpful to me. I feel like I try to stay true to the dynamics, but sometimes I play so softly that I can’t be heard. Prof. Lee emphasizes that when you’re playing a solo piece with piano, you should play louder than the piano accompanist. Thank you Prof. Lee for giving these students excellent instruction!"

Violinist, Yi Shen, shares her experience working with faculty member, Luke Fleming in her Chamber Coaching:

"Our group worked with Prof. Fleming in chamber coaching. His superb technique and excellent guidance gave our group a deep understanding of chamber music. The cooperation between each instrument, the direction of the music melody. This is the first time for me to rehearse a performance with the professor as a group, and I am lucky to be able to work with him as a group and be guided by him. I like our classroom atmosphere very much."

Clarinetist, Anoushka Divekar's takeaways from faculty member, Amal Gochenour's Wind Seminar on auditions:

"Today, Ms. Amal Gochenour talked to us about auditioning. Here are some takeaways for me:

1. Listen to the entire piece. Watch the conductor. Listen to other pieces by the composer. We have so many resources to see concerts these days, so that we can learn the sound of the music. Know the whole score.
2. In an audition you are not just impressing your section mates, or like-instrument teacher. You are playing for a panel of all kinds of classical musicians.
3. Create a clean copy of your music prior to each different audition. Development of you as a musician may not be like it was before, so it's important to be sure that you are starting fresh. You don't want to bring in old anxieties that you may not actually have anymore.
4. 6-8 weeks away from an audition is a good time to begin. How much you do a day depends on the amount of music and your schedule. Ms. Gochenour uses a timer on her phone so she can hit all the necessary excerpts.
5. Ms. Gochenour is a student of Mr. Almarza from whom we heard two weeks ago. She really hammered in those points to us of segmented practicing.
6. Start your practicing in from a place of success. (Don't play mistakes, segment shorter portions if necessary)
7. Putting music into your long-term memory is a way to help nerves not get in the way. You don't want to be reactive when performing. (Professor Cohen talked quite a bit about this as well. Do not "learn to drive the car" on the highway. You already need to know how to drive the car).
8. Prepare a pre-performance ritual, and practice these! Make it consistent and reliable. Control every aspect that isn't the playing (what you will wear, what the performance venue will be, what kind of food will you eat, what will you talk about before the audition)
9. Music is fun! This is all optional, we wouldn't be doing it if we didn't like it. Laugh!
10. Sleep. Enough said."
