Terry Redlin's interest in out-of-doors themes can be traced to his childhood in Watertown, South Dakota. Few artists can rival the standards of excellence achieved by Master Artist Terry Redlin over the past 30 years. He is truly one of the country's most widely collected painters of wildlife and Americana.

Terry Redlin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2007 at the age of 70. Shortly after his diagnosis, he announced his retirement from painting. Terry Redlin struggled for nine years with the disease. He lost his ability to paint. He lost his memories of his loved ones. And, on April 24, 2016, he lost his life.

The last painting Terry Redlin was able to complete before announcing his retirement will return to the Redlin Art Center on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026. "Evening on the Ice" will be on display for the entire month of September in an effort to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease.

Admission is free.

School starts in Watertown, SD next week! Wow! The summer flew by! Here's Terry Redlin's memory of his first day of school:

This painting brings to life the smell of autumn. The falling leaves color the ground as they float through the quiet stillness of the morning. As the school bus pulls around the corner, a mother tries to comfort her young son. While the driver waits, she gently tries to coax him out of his Radio Flyer. It’s his first day of school and he doesn’t want to leave the comfort of his mother’s arms, the safety of his yard, or his trusted furry friend, “Buddy”! There will be many more “first days”, but none like this one. With trepidation, the youngster will soon take that first step onto the bus leaving, for the first time, the security of home.

The second of seven in “An American Portrait”. As we step into the world Terry Redlin has created for them, we are aware that the paintings are compilations of experiences many of us have shared.

What a thrill to meet these creative, talented people! Thank you to all who joined us - and a special thank you to our instructor, Ashley Plummer. Stay tuned! We're in the planning stages but will be offering more classes for Fall 2026.
