We join singers and barbershop fans around the world in remembering the legendary Jarmela Speta. Jarmela, a tenor, was the first Sweet Adeline to win more than one international quartet championship – with The Nota-Belles in 1955 and The Rarities in 1970. She went on to direct Racine Chorus, the organization’s first-ever champion at the inaugural chorus competition in 1973. Jarmela received the Sweet Adelines International President’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. In 2023, she was interviewed as part of the commemoration of the first chorus contest. She said, “I’ve been involved in music all my life…I joined Sweet Adelines because I’m a musician and a singer, and I like being creative” – humble words from a singer whose influence as a musician, director, songwriter, arranger, and vocal teacher reverberates through generations.We are grateful for all she did to make SingUnited International what it is today. SingUnited/Sweet Adelines International has lost a legend.
Jarmela Speta, Director of the Racine Chorus/Opus 2000, Coach, Arranger, and Mentor, passed away yesterday, August 10th, 2026.
Racine Chorus, directed by Jarmela, was the very first chorus to win a blue ribbon at the very first International Chorus Competition in 1973.
