Join us for the last concert of the 2021-22 Season: Susanna Phillips, Soprano

Alabama-born soprano Susanna Phillips continues to establish herself as one of today’s most sought-after singing actors and recitalists.

Ms. Phillips is a recipient of The Metropolitan Opera’s 2010 Beverly Sills Artist Award. Known for her sparkling portrayal of Musetta in La bohème, Ms. Phillips has sung at the Met for 12 consecutive seasons in the roles of Musetta, Pamina, Donna Anna, Rosalinde, Antonia/Stella, Micaëla, Donna Elvira, and most recently as Countess Almaviva - a role very close to her heart.

Role highlights at the Met include Fiordigili, which The New York Times called a “breakthrough night”, and Clémence in the Met premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s L’amour de Loin. Ms. Phillips was also a featured artist in the Met’s Summer Recital Series.

One of the most in-demand ensembles in the world, the Dover Quartet opens our 26th season on Saturday, September 25 with a program by Schubert, Berg, and Mendelssohn.

Hailed as “the next Guarneri Quartet” (Chicago Tribune), their burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing have made them “the young American string quartet of the moment” (New Yorker.)

Waterford Concert Series COVID-19 policy for 2021-22

We have given much thought to how to provide a safe environment for both our audience and performers within the county and state COVID-19 guidelines. Consistent with the COVID policies adopted by most concert organizations in our region, the Board of Directors has decided that:

a) All patrons will need to show paper or electronic confirmation of full vaccination or proof of a negative Rapid COVID-19 antigen test or PCR test taken within 72 hours of the concert. At home antigen tests (available at CVS and other stores) will be accepted.

b)Patrons will need to wear a mask while indoors throughout the concert. Complimentary masks will be available at the door.

While only limited social distancing will be possible inside the Old School auditorium, we will make our best effort to space our seating, and we ask that couples/groups coming together leave a vacant chair in between if possible.

Doors will be opened to the stone patio for intermission for you to enjoy the lovely views of historic Waterford, and we will have complimentary water bottles available. Masking will not be required outdoors.

Our upcoming season is one of the most exciting that we can remember, and—as an additional bonus—will include a sixth concert that will be free for all current subscribers who moved their subscriptions forward from last year.

Update on our 2021 Season

We are sure that you will not be surprised to hear that the pandemic has forced us to make further changes to our concert schedule and to reschedule all of our Spring 2021 concerts to new dates over the next two years.

However, Covid permitting, we now plan to start our next Concert Season in September 2021, running to May 2022. This shift to a Fall-Spring calendar will be permanent, bringing us into line with most other concert series.

The good news is that our upcoming 2021/22 Concert Series is one of the most exciting that we can remember, and—as an additional bonus—includes a sixth concert that will be free for all current subscribers who moved their subscriptions forward from last year.

The season is as follows:

September 25, 2021: Dover String Quartet

Hailed as “the next Guarneri Quartet” (Chicago Tribune) and “the young American String Quartet of the moment,” (New Yorker), the Dover Quartet was named the first-ever quartet-in-residence at the Kennedy Center and has been called “string quartet nirvana” (Santa Fe New Mexican).

October 17, 2021: Hermitage Piano Trio

Descending from the great Russian tradition, the three-time GRAMMY award-nominated Hermitage Piano Trio recently “turned in a performance with such power and sweeping passion that it left you nearly out of breath” (Washington Post).

November 15, 2021: WindSync

Performing entirely from memory, Wind Sync “is a wind quintet like you’ve never heard or seen,”(Classical MPR), known for their intimate, joyful, and thoughtful performances.

March 20, 2022: Alessio Bax

“Among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public,” (Gramophone) and “perhaps the most elegant of today’s young pianists” (New Yorker), Alessio Bax is a young pianist “worth getting excited about” (New York Times).

April 9 or 10, 2022: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Wind Ensemble with Piano

Members of London’s famous chamber orchestra, the Academy’s Wind Ensemble will be joining with pianist and conductor Simon Crawford-Phillips on a tour with amazing piano-winds music that the Washington Post has called “luminous, often breathtaking.”

May 1, 2022: Luca Pisaroni

Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni is one of the world’s most sought-after singers whose “unerring dedication to vocal beauty and dramatic truth has made him one of the most thrilling performers of his generation” (Opera News).

The Castalian String Quartet and Jess Gillam, who were part of our original 2020 season, are being rescheduled for our Fall 2022 Season.

If you are a current subscriber who moved your 2020 subscription forward, you are already automatically enrolled as a 2021/22 Season subscriber, and no further action is needed on your part.

Similarly, purchases of tickets for a particular concert will be honored on that concert’s new date. Please remember that no tickets will be mailed, but the names of subscribers and individual ticket holders will be placed on the Will Call List and checked at arrival.

New subscriptions and tickets for individual concerts will be put on sale later this year.

As an all-volunteer organization, we are always grateful for any donations you may wish to make toward bringing classical music to Waterford by mailing a check to PO Box 251, Waterford, VA 20197, or through our website (waterfordconcertseries.org). We hope you share our enthusiasm for our new season, and, with the heartfelt hope that concert going is possible again by September, we very much look forward to seeing you in the Fall!

Wishing you a safe and healthy spring,

The Board of Directors of the Waterford Concert Series

Susan Sutter (President), David Robinson (Vice President), Margaret Bocek (Secretary), Ginny Friend (Treasurer), Charlotte Gollobin, Eleanor Adams, Heather Gold.

Notice to our supporters:

After careful deliberation, we have decided to cancel the remainder of our 2020 Season. While we had hoped the situation with the COVID-19 virus would ameliorate by the Fall, the situation has not improved enough for us to offer a safe environment for our audience and performers.

We are in the process of notifying our subscribers of options for their subscriptions. We will also be contacting individual ticket holders.

The good news is that we have been able to reschedule Alessio Bax and the Dover Quartet in 2021 and are working to reschedule Luca Pisaroni, WindSync and the Trio Settecento for future dates. We also have three exciting new groups that were previously contracted for 2021. We plan to begin our season in March unless COVID guidance prevents it. If we are not able to start in the spring as planned, then we will adjust accordingly.

Our 2021 schedule is as follows:

March 14: Castalian String Quartet, 2019 Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artists of the Year
April 18: Alessio Bax, elegant and remarkable Italian Pianist
May 2: Jess Gillam, young British Saxophonist who closed the BBC Proms in 2018
September 25 (Saturday): Dover Quartet, first string quartet in residence at the Kennedy Center
October 17: Hermitage Piano Trio, Russian artists nominated three times for Grammy Awards

We appreciate all who support our series. Donations of any amount are welcome by mail to PO Box 251, Waterford, VA 20197 or through our website: waterfordconcertseries.org. The Waterford Concert Series is a 501(c)(3) organization, Tax ID #47-5642385. With your continued support, we plan to present fine classical music in Waterford for years to come!

Best wishes for a safe and healthy summer,

The Board of Directors of the Waterford Concert Series
Susan Sutter, Ginny Friend, Charlotte Gollobin, Eleanor Adams, Margaret Bocek, David Robinson, and Heather Burnett Gold
