We are thrilled to announce our next gallery show at The Hesterly Black, FIONA SMALL: SEA TALK, opening Friday, January 16th, 6-8pm, on exhibit through March 13th, 2026. Featuring Fiona Small’s photography, videography and performance art, the opening celebration will also feature a special performance downstairs at The Phoenix by Moira Smiley and Laurel Jenkins from 6:30-7pm followed by an art talk and Q + A with Fiona upstairs among her exhibit.
FIONA SMALL, a multidisciplinary artist born on San Juan Island, Washington, discovered her creative passion from an early age and began exhibiting her work at age 11. After studying musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, she delved deeper into the arts during her six-year residency in Colorado. Fiona was recognized with Naropa University’s Rising Artist Award upon graduating with a BA in Music and a Minor in Performance in 2020. Her work explores multi-sensory experiences, neurodiversity, environmentalism, grief, contemporary clowning, and whimsy through vibrant collage, performance art and multimedia pieces. After spending 2.5 years in Vermont and collaborating with renowned musicians including Moira Smiley, Seamus Egan, and Mikahely, Fiona is now back on the San Juan Islands.
LAUREL JENKINS is a dancer, choreographer, educator, and mother. Her choreography emerges from rigorous experimentation and interdisciplinary dialogues in the realms of contemporary dance, opera, music, and theater. LA Weekly writes that she creates “extraordinary movement/sound pieces in which the body becomes the most versatile of instruments, playing the music of an invisible dimension.”
Singer / Composer MOIRA SMILEY has toured the world and recorded with Indie-pop favorites, Tuneyards, performing with them on all the late-night TV shows (Kimmel, Colbert, Conan O’Brien, UK’s Jools Holland, etc.) and recently to re-open David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in NYC with Chris Thile, Hilary Hahn and Brad Mehldau. She began her singing career in Baroque and Medieval music, collaborating with Paul Hillier, Fretless Consort of Viols, Dufay Collective and Sinfonye, BBC Singers and New World Symphony.
