With so much misinformation regarding rhizome roots and growth. I thought that a simple pictorial should help clear things up. Whether it be Iris ensata (Japanese) pictured here, Siberian, or bearded, they basically all grow the same. Last year's plant, if grown well, is this year's bloom. The mother rhizome will only bloom once. It is the new daughters (increases) that need to be grown well after the mother's bloom for the plant to set up bloom for the following year (this year's growth is next year's bloom). The new roots are actively growing on the new daughters (rhizomes), not on the old mother rhizome. Remember, a rhizome is the stem of the plant as it grows, the bottom grows roots, and the top grows leaves. As the rhizome grows and elongates, the holes that show on the bottom of the old rhizome were once roots. The ridges on top of the rhizomes were once leaves.

While mowing the lawns a few color spots from the reblooming Siberians caught my eye.

Getting ready for the floral display at the Portland, Oregon, Japanese Garden on Sunday. High temperatures I needed to cut the blooms Saturday morning between five and ten am. Brought them indoors for expansion and to escape the heat.
