Stardust Slow Balboa Weekend is this week! We're so excited to share some more of the talented staff who will make this year another shining experience.

Dee Matthews and Sara-Sofia Rentas won the open competition last year at Stardust Weekend, and, in addition to teaching a free drop-in lesson on slow dancing on Friday night 8-9 PM, they're also teaching a bonus free lesson on Saturday night 8-9 PM on sweeps and crosses in footwork.

In the class, they will explore both solo and partnered sweeping foot movements as well as set ups for different crossing footwork, both inside the basic and as transitions into promenade. Students should have experience with Dean's basic as well as ad libs and promenade in Slow Bal.

Scott Silbert is a mainstay in Washington D.C. jazz music, with his career as an arranger and his work as a featured soloist in groups such as the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. For the past 4 years, he has helmed a big band on the Saturday night spot of the DC Lindy Exchange to sell-out crowds. At Stardust, Scott’s Big Band will feature a string section. They will perform a wide array of slow (and fast!) swinging big band music specifically curated for this event. This will be an evening of music that you probably won’t hear at any other swing dance or live jazz concert.

Connor Cole, pictured here with Amanda Gerken, is one of our DJs for Stardust Slow Balboa Weekend. Connor first learned Slow Balboa from Mickey Fortanasce, Jacob Wi**er, and Kelly Arsenault and found that the dance opened up a newfound appreciation for the slow and swinging music that he has always loved. He is excited to participate in DJing again at Stardust Weekend.

Allison Meeks is one of our DJs this year. Allison began DJing swing music when she was a baby lindy hopper in college. Since then, she has become a regular swing DJ in the Durham, N.C. area and in the national dance scene, playing for dancers at events like Lindy Focus, Camp Hollywood, CalBal, All Balboa Weekend and more.

Allison is passionate about sharing swing music that inspires new and experienced dancers alike. She’s a fan of catchy melodies, small group arrangements and a good clarinet solo (not necessarily in that order).

On Friday, the Midiri Brothers on clarinet and vibraphone will team up with veteran Washington D.C. band leader Craig Gildner for a tribute on Friday night to the slow (and sometimes fast!) swinging music of small groups during the swing era, including Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, and Count Basie.

The Midiri Brothers are celebrated jazz virtuosos who often perform for traditional jazz audiences, and we are honored to have them play for a swing dance. Craig Gildner is a D.C. jazz fixture who has organized bands and performed at swing dances for two decades.

We're proud to have Geoff Newell as our MC. Geoff is a vernacular jazz and social dancer with 15 years of experience teaching, DJing, organizing, emceeing, and otherwise giving what he can wherever he fits into the social dance community. He has so much love for the social dance world, the people who find it, and the amazing art it allows those people to create. He puts his energy into learning more about cultural social dances, their roots, and how they balance tradition and innovation. He looks to help those around him get the most out of their own journey in the social dance world, regardless of the hat he is wearing. Ask him about his favorite version of Flying Home!
