For every entrance of every exhibit we will honor the legends that came before us and the showgirls that paved the way for us to shake and shimmy.

Today we honor Black showgirl legend Toni Elling ✨

The built a showgirl alter to honor the Black people who kept the art alive when the world tried to erase them.

Toni Elling (1928–2023), known as “The Satin Doll,” was a Detroit-born burlesque legend who began her career at 32 after leaving a telephone operator job.

Even when she was denied promotions because she was Black the stage made clear her talents were undeniable.

Inspired by her friendship withDC jazz icon Duke Ellington, she took the nickname The Satin Doll and performed with an elegance that defined classic burlesque in the 1960s and 70s.

We turn to Mama Toni for the slow burn. The control and storytelling that doesn’t need a prop just a stage and a spotlight!

In 2014 she was honored as a Living Legend by the Burlesque Hall of Fame recognizing a lifetime of artistry and barrier-breaking for Black showgirls.

This altar is a small act of devotion.A reminder that burlesque history is sacred, and that the women who built it deserve to be remembered in full glamour. Much love to all the performers who crafted this art piece with love.

Thank you to for sharing portraits and original costume pieces from Toni’s private collection.
