A huge thank you to the Fulbright Vietnam Program and the Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State for their amazing support and guidance. This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without you. 🙏

Vu Do, 2nd year Fulbright graduate fellow spent his winter in the Painting Conservation Department at the National Gallery of Art, under the guidance of panel painting specialist Sue Ann Chui. Vu's main objective was to delve deeper into the world of European paintings on wood within the Gallery’s extensive collection. He focused his efforts on examining and preparing a report on "Nativity, with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel" by the Sienese master Duccio di Buoninsegna. Utilizing the lab's digital microscope, he captured highly detailed photomacrographs of the surface. Through a thorough investigation that involved consulting existing records including infrared reflectography and x-radiography, Vu was able to make significant discoveries. Notably, he determined that the gilding on the existing frame is the result of a recent restoration campaign which had obscured the original gilding. Vu was also able to confirm the structural relationship between this panel and the other predella paintings.

Beyond examination techniques, Vu gained hands-on experience in pigment identification through the use of x-ray fluorescence and fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy, guided by staff scientists. Additionally, he observed the meticulous process of photogrammetry in action carried out by imaging specialists of a portrait by the artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Vu also gave a presentation on Vietnamese lacquer to the conservation and curatorial staff that was very well received.

It was an incredibly special day as I had the opportunity to share about the art of Vietnamese lacquer painting at the Lecture Hall of the National Gallery of Art. I discussed the history of traditional lacquer materials, lacquer production, refinement, and even the times when I stayed in bed for 3 weeks because of lacquer rash (but I never give up). I also talked about the birth of lacquer painting art at the Indochina School of Fine Arts, the restoration of painter Nguyễn Gia Trí's works, and the lacquer painting research project of artist Tim Nguyễn that I am pursuing. My biggest wish is to spread the fascination of this material to the conservation community. At the end of the presentation, I received many comments and new ideas, hoping to soon unravel these mysteries.

Some of the research objectives I mentioned in the presentation include:
- The degradation pathways of lacquer pigments (orpiment).
- The lightfastness of modern lacquer pigments.
- The impact of additives on the lacquer film, such as pine resin and quick-drying agents.
- A specially designed synthetic varnish for lacquer painting that can be safely removed.

Donna Strahan, Head of Conservation and Scientific Research at the National Museum of Asian Art came to Buffalo to give us a lecture on Asian Lacquer. She has shared her personal collection of lacquer objects from all over the world. It was an incredible opportunity to learn from Donna and have her assist with my research project.

Meet Vu Do (Class of 2025), an emerging 2nd-year Fulbright graduate fellow from Vietnam 🇻🇳! This summer, he's diving into his first internship experience at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art in Washington D.C. ( ) working alongside Objects Conservator, Ellen Chase. Vu's current focus? He is working on the treatment and comprehensive analysis of a lacquered and glazed ceramic sculpture portraying a Qilin. This exquisite piece is attributed to the renowned Japanese artist Ogawa Haritsu (1663-1747), celebrated for his distinctive fusion of unconventional materials in his creations. The sculpture was made from low-fire clay, glazed and decorated with gold leaf, mother of pearl and red lacquer. But that's not all, Vu also gave a presentation on the mesmerizing history and techniques of Vietnamese lacquer art.

1) Removing an old repair on the right rear foot.
2) Filling a gap along the join, ready for inpainting.
3) Using the Keyence digital microscope to examine the paint surface.
4) Photomicrograph of the gilding over the colored glaze on the proper left ear at 500x using the Keyence digital microscope.
5) X-radiograph of the sculpture shows air pockets in the glazed surface, which was later identified as a lead glaze using XRF. (Photo: Matt Clarke)
6) Ultraviolet imaging reveals old repairs on the right rear foot.
7) Giving a presentation on the history and techniques of Vietnamese lacquer art.

A New Chapter!✨
Since December 2020, I have determined that I want to pursue a Master Degree in Art Conservation in US so that upon returning I can start a training program for our people, together we can protect our cultural heritage. Knowing the competitiveness of the Programs, I applied to the Fulbright Award and was selected as a finalist. I would never imagine that one day I could become a Fulbrighter. The last 2 years was most challenged: fulfilling the Chemistry prerequisite, organizing Phan Ke An's exhibition, teaching at 3 schools and preparing applications for both Fulbright and graduate schools.
After all, I am proud to share that I have been accepted to the M.A/M.S Program at the Patricia H. & Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College, New York . I am so grateful for the supports from my family, my friends, and my mentors. It is a dream comes true!
