Al Pacino reportedly stated that Tony Montana was his favorite character he has ever played.

At the 50th-anniversary Q&A for Dog Day Afternoon in 2025, Pacino said Tony Montana remains his personal favorite performance.

"Straight out, nothing touches Scarface... I saw Howard Hawks' Scarface at the Tiffany Theatre in West Hollywood, and I said, I gotta do this film. That performance inspired me so much I called Marty Bregman right away."

Pacino added that he feels "personally responsible" for bringing the character to life - "I felt personally that I caught that one."
