In celebration of World Art Deco Day, tomorrow, April 28, 2022, our friends in the UK are hosting what sounds like a wonderfully interesting program about a virtual night out in London!
Nights in London: When Mayfair Makes Merry - Lucy Jane Santos
Thu 28 Apr 2022,
6:30PM - 8:30PM BST
Online
This event is part of World Art Deco Day 2022 for more information please visit https://www.icadsartdeco.org/
Join the Art Deco Society UK for a virtual night out in London. Our speaker, historian Lucy Jane Santos, will make sure you are dressed in all the latest fashions, show you the best way to get into town and all the best (and some of the worst) clubs in London’s West End.
We will look at how clubs owners such as the infamous Kate Meyrick, owner of the ‘43’ — were willing to push the boundaries of the law in the face of imprisonment and the wrath of a Home Secretary who had declared a “War on Nightclubs.” Investigate the police scandal that brought the Metropolitan Police’s integrity and methods into question and track the rise of the Bottle Party and further crackdowns of the late 1930s as the police attempted to “cleanse” London of illegal drinking.

Hello All! This walking tour may be of interest to those interested in the work of John Joseph Earley. The tour includes the Franciscan Monastery, one of the masterworks of John Joseph Earley. Earley was the noteworthy builder who perfected decorative concrete that we saw during the Art Deco Society’s open house program at one of his Polychrome Houses in Silver Spring a couple weeks ago. Other great JJ Earley projects include Meridian Hill Park and ceilings at the Department of Justice and National Airport historic terminal.

Intended to be the model dry city for the country, Washington, DC ended up with more than 3,000 speakeasies and a widespread disregard for the law of the land.
