In my artwork I have always been intrigued by wildlife that lives in, on, or near the water. That being said I have also done sculptures of bears, owls, cats and other creatures that are not water focused. I like working in simplified forms that capture the essence of the animal I am sculpting. Inuit art and sculpture I enjoy very much. From an early age I have always been interested in animals,
what they look like, their habitats and how they live. They are incredibly intelligent and possess intelligence humans are only just starting to understand. Animals have always captured my imagination for their beauty, power and for some of them their social natures. Creating sculptures that people can interact with safely. WHAT I CAN BRING TO A PROJECT: All of the above as well as An understanding of an interest in how things are made, finished and protected from the weather. An ability to work at a range of scales whether it be at the scale of a large building or a hand held piece of art. Business, technical and design experience that comes with over twenty years of practicing architecture in the Washington, DC Area. I bring to the program a working method is typically as follows but will vary depending on the project:
• Initially I do profile/elevation drawings, profile, silhouette cut outs or simple volumetric studies in clay of the work to understand its shape and explore the possibilities of the proposed work.
• After getting a general sense for the piece or pieces I then do more involved three dimensional studies in paper/cardboard or sculpt in clay more elaborate studies.
• The final piece is then cast in iron, bronze, plaster or resin; carved in wood; welded/fabricated in metal; cut out with a plasma or laser cutter, router or CNC machine or assembled from found objects.
• With my training and practice as an architect I am also very comfortable doing design drawings, reviewing a fabricator’s engineered shop drawings and then having a piece fabricated by others.
