What influences Juan Sánchez?

Juan Sánchez's work is colorful, expressive, and experimental, and draws from many different traditions, including graffitti and gestural abstraction, and is rooted in Taíno, African, and Christian spirituality. He often pays homage to Puerto Rico independence activists and civil rights icons, religious figures, family members, and his Nuyorican community (New York and Puerto Rican).

Juan Sánchez: States of Liberation will open at the Phillips in June 2027. The exhibition will feature approximately 75 works including paintings, works on paper, photography, and video, offering a comprehensive look at Sánchez’s powerful and thought-provoking art.

We can't wait to share the exhibition with you in June 2027!

Celebrate curiosity, creativity, resilience, and joy with our community exhibition Creative Aging: Art is Essential.

The works in this exhibition were made by Creative Aging participants, which includes older adults with memory loss and their care partners. Each session begins in the galleries, where participants share observations, explore emotions, and connect with works of art. These conversations continue through hands-on artmaking, resulting in the artworks currently on view through November 8.

See you there!

An exciting new acquisition for The Phillips Collection—George Morrison's Untitled (1961), gifted by Reid Walker!

Morrison (Ojibwe, 1919–2000) was a pioneering Native American modernist whose paintings, works on paper, and sculptural collages contributed significantly to the development of American abstraction. Born in Chippewa City, a remote Ojibwe community on the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, Morrison began drawing and carving at an early age. Untitled (1961) exemplifies George Morrison’s approach to abstraction in the early 1960s, with distinct fields of color and a thick application of paint that give the work a dynamic, gestural quality.

The work expands the collection and establishs a genealogy through which Native American art can be understood as an integral part of the broader history of American abstraction.

Who is Juan Sánchez?

Sánchez was born in 1954 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, to working-class Afro-Puerto Rican parents. Known for his expressive visual language, Sánchez developed a politically charged body of work drawing from his experiences and his roles as an activist, professor, and a central figure in the Latinx art world. Working across painting, printmaking, video, public art, and photography, Sánchez practice reflects his commitment to both political engagement and aesthetic experimentation.

In June 2027, Juan Sánchez: States of Liberation, the artist's first traveling retrospective will open at The Phillips Collection!

Nobody tell our boss...

Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea tells the story of the enduring friendship between three towering figures in American art: Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903–1970), and highlight the inspiration they derived from summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann. Through approximately 90 paintings, drawings, and watercolors from the 1920s to the mid-1960s, this exhibition will for the first time reflect in depth on the artistic exchange between these three artists, the experiences they shared, and the support that they provided to each other.

See Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea at the Phillips beginning on October 24.
