Growing up in the East, I often think of Thai culture like Bangkok traffic. From the outside, it can look chaotic—different vehicles, different speeds, and different ways of moving. Yet somehow, we learn to move alongside one another and make space for each other.

Thai culture is deeply rooted in tradition, but we also grow up surrounded by many different ways of living, believing, and expressing ourselves. We don’t care what you look like or how different you may be, as long as you are a good and respectful person. We may not always fully understand one another, but we learn to coexist and respect our differences.

We are all human and equally important to the larger community, with different roles and ways of contributing. By respecting one another and allowing people to be themselves, we each contribute to holding our community together and moving it forward. To me, this tradition of kindness, understanding, and respect for one another is part of what has helped Thai culture live together in peace.

I have been spending time at โรงเรียนรุ่งอรุณ Roong Aroon school, learning both the philosophy and traditional processes behind traditional Thai art.

Alongside traditional drawing, pigments, and painting techniques, I have been learning about จริยะศิลป์ (Jariya Silpa) “Ethical Art Practice” a practice of being present, observing clearly, acting accordingly, and continuing with consistency. My teachers are also teaching me how to prepare myself to work, move through hesitation, and find my own creative flow.

Beyond technique, they have shown me the importance of being a giver, not only a taker, and that the value art gives back to us can go far beyond money or status. What we learn and pass on to others can be just as valuable.

Part of my time here is also to help preserve traditional knowledge and support the school in developing a class for international artists, with the hope of including it in my creative exchange trips to Thailand next year.

🙇🏻‍♀️ Special thanks to Master อาจารย์ผ่อง เซ่งกิ่ง , National Artist of Thailand 2024; Professor Krirkbura_Yomnage_Official ; and Head Teacher บัวลอย (Chaiwat Phumphuang) for making time to teach me during the school’s off-season. Your generosity with your time and guidance has impacted me deeply and is helping me grow into a better artist. I hope to carry these traditions forward and find meaningful ways to share our culture with artists from different backgrounds.

as my career continues to grow, I’m realizing that my idea of success is changing too💡

I used to focus so much on building my career as a fine artist. I still care deeply about my studio practice, but I’m becoming more interested in how my practice can create something meaningful between cultures.

Living and working between Eastern and Western cultures has given me the opportunity to see the strengths of both. Rather than choosing one over the other, I want to create spaces where people can meet, exchange ideas, learn from one another, and build genuine relationships.

My artwork will always be an important part of my practice, but I’m beginning to see my role as an artist more broadly—bringing artists and creative communities together, sharing knowledge and traditions, and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.

I don’t know exactly where this direction will take me yet, but I know I want my career to grow in a way that doesn’t only benefit me as an individual artist, but also gives something back to the communities and cultures that have shaped who I am. Thank you so much for your support 🇺🇸🙇🏻‍♀️🇹🇭
