🙏 Thank you to Shannon K. Winston for her lovely review of my work in Brown Bag Lit’s Milk Journal. If you don’t know Shannon, she’s one of the most wonderful people I know, and the review moved me to tears.

“What is known becomes unknown, what is soft becomes deadly. Artfully, Shaw upends expectations and weaves together disparate threads that are, in the end, deeply intertwined.”

How do you like your love stories: comic or tragic? 🎭 📚 Tell me in the comments!

Hazzard and Groff both give us a little (or a lot) of each, one beautiful sentence after another. Let’s talk together about the how, the why, and the what in Transit of Venus and Fates and Furies.

✨It Will Have Been So Beautiful is in the Los Angeles Review! For *a limited time only* :) I have the honor of being the first book review on the page! Robert Dunsdon connected with the work in all the ways I hoped, and I am delighted by what he wrote.

“A lively and bold use of language. Various and engaging, the poems each carry within them something of account.”

Thank you, Robert, for your lively and original approach to the book. I appreciate how well you followed the leaps in language and the little idiosyncrasies in my mind. 🙏

Will They or Won’t They? Or, “Reader, I Married Him”

When humans tell stories, they talk about love. But the undying popularity of Jane Austen adaptations isn’t just about our need to find love. It’s also about our desire to hear and participate in stories through art.

The Transit of Venus and Fates and Furies are huge novels whose vibrant prose and profound honesty about the possibilities for human intimacy give us new ways to talk about power, gender, and even morality. I’m so excited to have this chance to return to teaching, and I’d love to see poets and writers in the Zoom audience! Starting Feb 20, via Politics & Prose.

📅 February 20, 27, March 6 & 13
🕒 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm ET
📍 Location: Online (Registration is required.)

Hi Everyone,

This will probably be clear from the tone, but you’ll be seeing posts from me in the coming weeks that have been written and posted with the help of the fabulous Jessica Bland, friend and social media genius. She’ll maintain my presence on this page, partially because…the algorithm.

I have conflicting feelings about social media these days (we all do). Still, I also want to maintain community, announce events (of course), and muse about all the debut author hijinx. Jessica’s here to add a little extra sparkle and make it all look cool. ✨

Thank you again–there’s so much out there you could be reading, and I’m cognizant of the luck I have.

Warmly,
Amanda

Happy New Year! 🥂🥳🥂

I’m always a tiny bit (or a lot) late to the game, but I finally put some thoughts together about the year—thoughts which wound up way too long for a post. So let’s call it a blog–one which happens to be (partially) about how I’m always writing stuff that’s way too long for a post.

Full disclosure: I also wrote a little about grammar because I couldn’t help myself. I swear it’s a good kind of nerdiness-–the kind that wants friends to share it with.
