Which is your fave?
Don’t try modeling underwater… unless you know what you are doing. People often ask what it’s like to shoot models underwater, and well, it’s so much harder than it looks. It sometimes requires weighting yourself down, breathing off someone else’s regulator, keeping calm when you are out of air and chained to a ship wreck, etc… And if you are wondering if ‘land’ models will have an advantage thanks to their experiences modeling in air, you’d be mistaken. My cousin (a certified diver) has been modeling underwater for years. She started attending our underwater photography workshop () three years ago and has excelled every year she comes! Read below for some tips I tell beginner underwater models. Feel free to add your tips too!
1. Relax and Control Your Breathing: Staying relaxed is crucial for achieving natural poses underwater. Your air in your lungs affects your buoyancy. Slow, deep breaths before submerging can help you maintain a graceful appearance.
2. Use Your Hands Gracefully: Practice slow, fluid motions with your hands and fingers to create elegant lines and enhance the overall pose.
3. Make Use of Props and Costumes: Props like flowing fabrics or seashells, these can add uniqueness. Choose costumes that complement the underwater environment and allow for freedom of movement. DON’T choose props that shed glitter, rhinestones or microplastics ESPECIALLY in the open ocean.
4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to the environment and the direction of light. Position yourself to make the most of natural lighting, and use the water’s surface and reflections to create interesting effects.
5. Communicate with the Photographer before going under: Establish clear signals or gestures with your photographer to communicate while underwater. This will help you coordinate poses and make adjustments.
