This week is DC Climate Week! — The first time that DC has been established as the nation’s center of climate innovation, with opportunities to engage with policymakers, fund climate solutions, and showcase cutting-edge technologies. A big deal for climate and sustainability efforts in Washington, DC. To celebrate the big moment, Eaton DC has partnered with one of our coworking member organizations, Re:wild, to present a special immersive climate week installation, hosted on the first floor of our coworking space.

The activation features an interactive video installation (with headphones for participants to use) and quiz - all focusing on biodiversity and climate. Guests, members and program participants have the chance to win custom merchandise and sustainable prizes.

On top of it all, the installation art was created by 2024 Eaton House Resident Rose Jaffe. Eaton DC facilitated the collaboration by introducing Rose and the installation designer - leading to this great work and a job for Rose.

The installation went up today and will be on display through Friday, before it is sent out for its next showing in Los Angelos. When you get a chance, be sure to stop by and check it out. Also take a look at the attached video of the installation, where you can see the timelapse of the install.

Now on display in Eaton House - YOU Street: Black Broadway in Washington DC.

Before Shinola and luxury high-rises, before even the beginning of desegregation and the 1968 uprising, the U Street corridor in Washington, DC was known as Black Broadway. From the early 1900s into the 1950s, African Americans—subject to Jim Crow laws in other parts of town—were free to own businesses here and built what was often described as a “city within a city.”

By the 1960s, the area had birthed some of America’s most influential black leaders and intellectuals—the great jazz-band leader and pianist Duke Ellington and the world’s first renowned black opera singer, Madame Lillian Evanti; the pioneering Dr. Charles Drew, who created the country’s first blood bank; lawyer and Howard University professor Charles Hamilton Houston, whose famed student Thurgood Marshall prevailed in Brown v. Board of Education.

The primary mural and photographic display contains five photographs of historic U Street moments, individuals and locations. These photos originally appeared in Briana Thomas’s book “Black Broadway in Washington, DC” .The photos are framed and hung within a mural painted by DC artist Britnee Scott. The mural depicts the U Street neighborhood with various references to landmarks past and present. The photos are placed in roughly the location within the U Street Corridor in which they took place.

.hk presents, UNHEARD sound & music Festival, happening on July 30th, 31st & August 6,7th

Eaton HK partners with Contemporary Musiking HK and dtby for a unique festival exploring the nature of sound and music and its impact on us through a series of performances, talks, screenings and workshops.

Unheard is a festival that will examine not only the physical properties of sound, but also its command of our psychology: how expressive sound articulations like music can bring us together, how sound supports and manipulates moving image, how sound can both heal and disrupt, and how sound is felt as opposed to heard. The festival will also investigate the historical, social and cultural contexts of sound in our city: how musical styles like Cantopop have evolved with time and technology, and how the urban acoustics of Hong Kong interacts with its citizens’ physical and psychological wellbeing.

From those who are curious to the nature of sound and music to those amongst us who may be seasoned musicians or sound artists, the festival spanning the length of two weekends is sure to have something for everyone.
