We wrapped up May with our AAPI presentation, highlighting dances we learned from members of our AAPI community: Dragon Dance, Tinikling, and Hula. 🌺🐉🎋
This student-led project was driven by the initiative, collaboration, and dedication of our students. Through learning these dances and the stories behind them, students gained a deeper appreciation for the richness of different cultures and the importance of respecting and celebrating one another’s traditions.
Our students need mirrors that reflect their own identities and experiences, but they also need windows that help them see and learn from the world around them. This experience provided both—offering opportunities to connect with cultures represented in our community while learning from people whose backgrounds, traditions, and perspectives may differ from their own. Our communities are filled with teachers, and there is so much to gain when we learn from one another.
Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge, supported our students, and helped make this experience so meaningful. We are proud of all that our students learned and accomplished together. AAPIHeritageMonth

After learning from the Filipino community 🇵🇭Today’s project blended the rhythm of tinikling with the stick formation inspired by singkil. We know this isn’t traditional singkil, but it was a fun way for the kids to explore different Filipino dance elements, teamwork, and rhythm. Most importantly, they had a great time learning and participating!

“In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, my 4th graders have been learning tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance that’s as much about teamwork as it is about rhythm. As they practiced, I watched them build trust, communication, and patience with one another. The dancers and bamboo pole holders must stay completely in sync, which means listening closely, encouraging each other, and learning from mistakes together. We even added our own musical twist, exploring how this game can be done with different songs—as long as the rhythm stays steady. It’s been incredible to see how this joyful activity strengthens not just coordination, but also cooperation and confidence. 🇵🇭

Happy Friday!!! n Kinder, we’re not just teaching steps—we’re shaping humans. 💫
When our students partner dance, something bigger is happening beneath the surface. They’re learning how to listen, how to lead and follow, how to respect personal space, and how to connect with someone else in a positive way. They practice patience, teamwork, and empathy—skills that matter far beyond the dance floor.
Yes, they’re moving to the music.
But they’re also building confidence.
They’re learning to trust.
They’re discovering how to be part of something bigger than themselves.
At this age, social-emotional growth is the real choreography. And every spin, step, and smile is part of that beautiful process. 💛
