We hope you’re enjoying the summer, whether you’re taking summer courses, taking a well-deserved break from your studies, or traveling near and far.

With the excitement of the NEXT Festival and Graduation now behind us, we’re taking a moment to look back on an extraordinary semester at the Luther W. Brady Gallery.

This spring brought inspiring collaborations across disciplines and borders:
▪️an international partnership for Callas at La Scala, exploring the artistry of costume design and the legacy of La Divina;
▪️a joint effort between Art History and Museum Studies students on Portraying the Mask, examining the boundaries between persona and character through the photography of Philippe Halsman;
▪️and American Made, a student-curated exhibition that engaged with the many layers of American identity, from overlooked stories and hidden histories to some of the nation’s most recognizable symbols.

Thank you to our students, faculty, partners, alumni, and visitors for making this semester so memorable. We look forward to welcoming you back in the fall, where more exciting projects and exhibitions will await!

Final days to experience American Made at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery.

This student-curated exhibition brings together works from the GW Collection and the Textile Museum to reflect on the many ways America has been imagined, constructed, challenged, and redefined. But conversations about America are impossible without your participation. Throughout the exhibition, students designed interactive elements that invite visitors to reflect on their own relationship to history, identity, and civic life.

American Made is a student-curated exhibition shaped through extensive collaboration across programs at the Corcoran. Developed through the Curatorial Research & Planning class led by Professor Laura Schiavo and the Collaborative Design Project led by Professor Sam Shelton, the exhibition brings together objects from both the GW Collection and the Textile Museum .

In this video, Methi Satyanarayana reflects on the role of textile objects, particularly quilts. From community-based craft and practices of reuse to their capacity to carry stories, quilts offer a powerful lens through which to consider the themes of American Made and the multiple social functions objects can hold.

The exhibition is on view for a limited time!

As part of the NEXT Festival, the Corcoran’s annual celebration of student work across disciplines, the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery presents American Made—a student-curated exhibition developed in collaboration between the Museum Studies and Interaction Design programs.

Marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, American Made critically examines how the nation has been constructed and imagined over time. Through a wide range of media and interactive elements, it challenges the idea of a singular American identity, instead foregrounding stories of resistance, redefinition, and transformation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the annual Corcoran Art History & Museum Studies Alumni Winter Mixer!

It was a pleasure to reconnect with alumni and friends, and to celebrate the opening of Portraying the Mask: Personas in Philippe Halsman’s Photography, a student-curated exhibition developed in Professor Lisa Lipinski’s “History of Exhibitions” seminar, bringing together Art History and Museum Studies students.

The show thoughtfully explores how Halsman used the camera to capture performance and persona, encouraging viewers to reflect on the many roles we inhabit. We’re grateful to everyone who made the evening so meaningful, and we hope this gathering continues to grow as a cherished tradition that bridges students, professionals, and alumni across the Corcoran community through the shared language of art.

Last week, pieces from the GW African Art Collection were professionally photographed as part of a multi-year collaboration with Professor Clement Akpang and his Art History students. These images will support ongoing research, a future exhibition at the Brady Gallery, and an upcoming publication. They’ll also be used to enhance our online database, expanding access to the collection for scholars and the public alike. Stay tuned as this important work continues.

It was a joy to welcome so many of you to the opening reception of Callas at La Scala at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery.

We are deeply grateful to Ambassador Marco Peronaci and the Italian Cultural Institute, as well as Ambassador Antonis Alexandridis and the Embassy of Greece, for their partnership in bringing this extraordinary project to Washington. Our thanks also go to the Friends of the Luther W. Brady Gallery for their continued support, and to the Corcoran School faculty, staff, and students whose contributions made this exhibition possible, especially those in Professor Tanya Wetenhall’s Costume History course, who played a central role in the research and installation process.

We’re excited for the joyful events to come and look forward to continuing to build community through exhibitions that bring us together across disciplines, institutions, and traditions.
