I really debated sharing this one but think it's important - both because it's a reminder to be thoughtful and because his response was ultimately appropriately apologetic. For context, we went on a (distanced, quarantined) date. He went on at some length about how amputation and amputees freak him out - he wasn't being cruel, it sounded more like a phobia - but still, not the most comfortable thing to nod and smile through while also realizing that he hasn't noticed me and now I have to explain that I too have a form of amputation. So please, be thoughtful when you engage with people - you never know what someone is going through.

Turns out he wasn't joking. To be clear: there are no safe ways to go about regular life right now. Do what you absolutely have to do, but while we have overflowing ICUs, overburdened healthcare workers, and children out of schools participating in indoor activities for fun is dangerous and selfish. I completely understand people need to work, and feel terrible that they end up risking their lives just to survive. No one NEEDS to go bowling and to the casino. And f**k everyone who chooses to while people are dying all around us.

Y’all - people are dying by the hundreds of thousands, millions more will have lifelong complications. If you are out there living your life like you’re not potentially spreading a devastating disease you are a monster.
