Yesterday was International Mother Language Day, and National Nawat Language Day in El Salvador, and we wanted to celebrate the Nawat language by sharing a video from our bilingual English/Nawat play "The Solstice King" which premiered at the Anacostia Playhouse in Washington, DC in 2024.
This adaptation of "Oedipus The King" was playwright Petrona Xemi Tapepechul's final investigative artwork with Nawat first-language speaker Anastacia Lopez Lopez (1962-2024) and featured an ensemble of Native actors in the DC metro area: Wilmer Xuarez, Yereth Adorno, Freedome Nsoroma Lee-El, Petrona Xemi Tapepechul, Michael Nephew, and Sofia Catalina.
In this video, the play's chorus of Elders tell the prophecy of the doomed king and his people.
One of our goals as a collective is to uplift Indigenous languages, and hope that our work with the Nawat language raises awareness about uplifting critically endangered languages and their first-language speaker communities.
