Yesterday was International Mother Language Day, and National Nawat Language Day in El Salvador, and we wanted to celebrate the Nawat language by sharing a video from our bilingual English/Nawat play "The Solstice King" which premiered at the Anacostia Playhouse in Washington, DC in 2024.

This adaptation of "Oedipus The King" was playwright Petrona Xemi Tapepechul's final investigative artwork with Nawat first-language speaker Anastacia Lopez Lopez (1962-2024) and featured an ensemble of Native actors in the DC metro area: Wilmer Xuarez, Yereth Adorno, Freedome Nsoroma Lee-El, Petrona Xemi Tapepechul, Michael Nephew, and Sofia Catalina.

In this video, the play's chorus of Elders tell the prophecy of the doomed king and his people.

One of our goals as a collective is to uplift Indigenous languages, and hope that our work with the Nawat language raises awareness about uplifting critically endangered languages and their first-language speaker communities.

(Castellano arriba)
Angel Rose Artist Collective presents a staged reading of a new Commedia dell'Arte play in Spanish by Petrona Xemi Tapepechul, in honor of International Commedia dell'Arte day!

Join us on Wednesday, February 25 at The Festival Center - 1640 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC. Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.

Play description:
After a home-based accident, Florinda, a docile ladina wife, suddenly turns into a perfect English-speaking stranger. Conchita, the house maid, must come up with a plan to get Mario and Florinda's home back to normal, and so she visits an old guillible doctor to trick her into giving Florinda free treatment. When a new language unexpectedly replaces the mother tongue, is the new dialect a parasite or a symptom? And how do you bring back a language that voluntarily vanished?

Join ARAC this summer at The Springwell School for three weeks of SPANISH & ARTS, where campers will explore the Spanish language through multiple disciplines of art (including theater, poetry, visual art, music, and more!) in a progressive immersion setting, culminating in a group showcase highlighting the week's work.

Each week, we will investigate Indigenous stories to guide us in the making of the campers' original creations. Campers work in a composite environment (ages ranging from 4 to 14) and survey the beautiful nature around Springwell's Sligo Creek campus. The camps are the following:

June 29-July 3:
Protectors of the Water - Indigenous stories about water

July 6-July 10:
Spirits of the Sky - Indigenous stories about sky

July 13-July 17:
Heart of the Land - Indigenous stories about land

This summer will be fun, educational, and creative! Visit The Springwell School's website for more information and to register your youth for the Spanish & Arts camps!

🚨 Mutual Aid Request 🚨
We’re raising $2,000 to support a DC family with two young kids who are transitioning out of unsafe housing after inspection failures and a recent traumatic incident.

They’ve secured a new permanent home, but due to a funding gap in July, they need help covering housing costs and moving expenses.
