To create each work, Wu pours thick coats of latex paint onto silicone surfaces, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding another layer of latex in turn to dry. The results are rich and vividly varied strata of dried paint, which Wu then cuts to reveal layers of colorful cross-sections, often touched by chance elements like cracking. Using these cross-sections as her base units, Wu assembles her paintings, building up relief and composition—piece by piece—on wood panels. Both the cross-sections and their eventual sculptural forms veer towards an order out of serendipity and planning. Following prearranged patterns, Wu erects pulsing grid-forms and mesmerizing reliefs of playful, shimmering paint, completed with a top coat of glossy resin to amplify her vibrant palette. Transforming latex paint from its original, liquid form—before fashioning it within new contexts and forms—the artworks acknowledge an abiding passion for the sensational and perceptual properties of materiality.

Varying her compositions from symmetrical renderings–like a Rorschach print–to others more liberally abstracted, Tran’s works challenge the notion of a correct way to view art. Like the well-known psychological test, Tran’s art performs an introspective function in which the viewer’s interpretation is self-reflexive and can facilitate self-knowledge.

Vonn Sumner’s visual vocabulary over recent years has centered around Krazy Kat, the iconic eponymous character from the comic strip created by George Harriman. Krazy Kat was first introduced to Sumner by his friend and mentor Wayne Thiebaud, and now for Sumner, the character has become “an ideal stand-in for all of us: a universalist, internationalist, every-person.” Sumner depicts Krazy Kat walking through richly painted whimsical environments that convey a sense of exuberance and connection with nature forged by our desire to escape and explore. The act of painting offers a place for refuge and renewal for the artist, and the luscious colors and patterns of his dreamlike landscapes offer the same for both Krazy Kat and a viewer of the work, both of whom are able to get lost in these new worlds.
