Three blocks from the Capitol dome, past the marble and the motorcades, there's a narrow room at 331½ Pennsylvania Ave SE where deer butts hang over the bathroom doors and Janet Reno once left a framed thank-you note for the burger. The Tune Inn has been pouring beers since 1947, and the building itself has been a candy shop, a Prohibition speakeasy, and a tailor for congressmen.

The man who built the legend was West Virginia Joe Nardelli, who took over in 1955, survived being shot six times in a parking lot robbery, and went right back to work. His regulars over the decades read like a fever dream of DC: Redford and Hoffman filming All the President's Men, Carville and Matalin on their first date, Wolf Blitzer at the bar, and a future Maine Senate candidate pulling shifts behind it.

Then came the 2011 kitchen fire that nearly took the whole place down, and the question every dive purist still argues about today. Here's the full 79-year story of how one stubborn little bar outlasted everything Capitol Hill threw at it.
