You know “Come From Away,” but what about the operation behind the true story?

The planes that diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, were among the thousands of flights affected by Operation Yellow Ribbon, Canada’s response to the attacks.

The people of Gander went far beyond the operation, however, opening their homes, schools and community spaces to thousands of unexpected guests—and a story of kindness, connection and extraordinary hospitality unfolded.

From a vital WWII airbase to the “Crossroads of the World,” Gander has a remarkable history of connecting people across the Atlantic.

And on September 11, 2001, the small Newfoundland town became an unexpected refuge for thousands of passengers stranded after U.S. airspace closed—welcoming nearly 7,000 people with open arms.

Their story inspired Come From Away, returning to Ford’s Theatre this September. ✈️❤️

On this day in 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas met in Ottawa, Illinois, for the first of seven debates that would shape the conversation around slavery and help propel Lincoln onto the national stage.

Lincoln, challenging Douglas for his U.S. Senate seat, argued against the expansion of slavery into the territories, while Douglas defended the principle of popular sovereignty.

More than 10,000 people gathered under the hot August sun to hear the two candidates debate for roughly three hours.

Lincoln ultimately lost the Senate election—but the debates brought him national attention and helped set the stage for his 1860 presidential campaign.
