Black Movement Dance Theatre Georgetown BMDT crosses the bridges built by its founders.

Black Movements Dance Theatre (BMDT) was founded on Georgetown's campus in the early 1980s by two distinguished African American students who had the passion and vision to express their experience to the Georgetown Community. The significance of its dance experiences over the years has created a tremendous journey for its members. BMDT's creative mode of expression has allowed the company to explo

re several dance styles while maintaining its artistic vision. The company specializes in modern, ballet, Afro-jazz, tap, hip-hop, and African dance. As a dance theatre, BMDT continues to fuse the medium of dance and drama throughout its work.

Next up in our Groundbreaker Spotlight, is the talented Geoffrey Holder.

Best known for the creation of the Dougla Ballet. Holder introduced a mixture of African and South Asian culture to a white-dominated industry. The Dougla Ballet depicts the wedding of a Dougla couple through vibrant color and dance. His work broke the norms and made its history as one of the most iconic works of dance. His work in films and music like Annie further engraved his talents into legacy and established him as Trailblazer. Geoffrey Holder's work brought representation and opened doors for those who followed in his footsteps.

Up next in our Groundbreaker Spotlight, is the talented Bill Robinson. Nickednamed “Bojangles”, Bill Robinson was an American tap dancer, actor, and singer. Known for his role in The Shirley Temple movies, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson was the most highly paid Black American entertainer in America during the first half of the 20th century. His long career mirrored changes in American entertainment tastes and technology. Robinson’s soft-shoe and tap routines were widely copied by other dancers. Robinson was most known for creating new tap steps and his famous “Stair Dance.” The talent of Robinson changed the art of tap and his impact still lives on today.

Throughout the month BMDT will be highlighting Black dancers and pioneers who have created legacies in their respective fields!

Today, we highlight the work and talent of the one and only Jennifer Jones! Prior to her audition, The Rockettes did not allow Black dancers in their line. In 1987, when she was 20 years old, Jones auditioned to be a Radio City Music Hall Rockette at a Rockettes Open Call. She made the cut and became the dance company's first African American Rockette in its then-62-year history. She was chosen out of 221 women who had auditioned for the 26 open spots on the coveted line. Today, Jones serves as an advocate for equal rights in the art’s community and spread awareness for Colon Cancer as a survivor.

"Finding The Antidote" is a short serves as a collection of BMDT's work this semester.
