--About the Artist--

John Morrell (1951-2025) was known as a painter of places, ranging between majestic landscapes chronicling his familiar places and renderings of more intimate corners of the world he observed. He attributes some of his inspiration from his connection to Upstate New York and the Hudson River Valley, but also from travel to Maine, England and France, as well as from the Washington DC region in particular the Georgetown neighborhood. His mastery of technique in an array of historical as well as newer media allowed him to conjure a strong sense of space, light, and personal experience. His later work explored glimpses between buildings, behind hedges, or over a fence or garden gate., He once remarked “I am often drawn to what I cannot see.”

Addison/Ripley Fine Art is pleased to present a memorial exhibition for highly respected DMV artist and professor, John Morrell (1951 - 2025) who passed away last year. Thoughtfully curated, based on over thirty years working with the artist, chosen from more than 30 years of work in the artist’s Virginia studio, this exhibition includes works on paper as well as on canvas.

John Morrell was known as a painter of places, ranging between majestic landscapes chronicling his familiar places and renderings of more intimate corners of the world he observed. He attributes some of his inspiration from his connection to Upstate New York and the Hudson River Valley, but also from travel to Maine, England and France, as well as from the Washington DC region in particular the Georgetown neighborhood. His mastery of technique in an array of historical as well as newer media allowed him to conjure a strong sense of space, light, and personal experience. Morrell's work was widely exhibited, nationally as well as internationally, earning him a well deserved reputation as a landscape artist with both an historical understanding of art techniques and materials and as one able to render his subjects in a contemporary mode. His paintings are included in many private and public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution.
